Did You Know – Cooking Tips #4

- Place flour in a salt shaker then use it to dust baking pans and work surfaces.
- Hot water kills yeast. One way to make sure the water isn’t too hot is to use a thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer, place a few drops of water on your wrist. If the water doesn’t feel hot or cold then it is just right.
- Sift your flour before measuring it for better accuracy.
- If you use a glass baking pan, reduce the temperature by 25ºF.
- If you want a finer textured bread, use milk instead of water. Water makes a coarser bread.
- To make your own bread crumbs, toast the heels of bread loaves and chop them in a blender or food processor.
- Do not use any eggs that have a crack in them when you take them out of the carton as they may contain bacteria.
- To test if your eggs are fresh or not, place them in a large bowl of cold water. If they float, throw them out.
- To keep cauliflower white when boiling, add a little milk to the water.
- A roast that has a bone in it will cook faster than a boneless roast. The bone carries the heat to the inside quicker.

Good to know about the floating egg trick to determine their freshness!
Yes it sure beats ruining a recipe! It’s ok to use if it floats halfway but better if it sinks.
Thank you so much!

Thank you Cheryl! The flour one made me wonder WHY didn’t I think of that after all these years.🤣

Thank you, these tips are so helpful! x
You’re welcome!
I have to remember the cauliflower trick — and also how easy it is to make your own bread crumbs.
I can never make bread crumbs like they said because the first pieces of bread my husband takes is the ends. I guess I could use the middle pieces but that’s what I love. Bread never sticks around in our house. 🤣
Wonderful tips, thanks!
You’re very welcome!
