Did You Know – Homemade Tarnish Removal

Clean your silver or silver plated silverware, silver coffee serving set or even silver jewelry with ingredients you already have at home. A simple dip or few minutes soak in the liquid removes the tarnish easily.

Mine was tarnished for about 30 years so I needed to soak it.

Start by forming foil, shiny side up, inside a dish that will hold 1 liter of water. If you are cleaning silverware, use a flat dish and turn the silverware over to do the other side, if needed. I used a bowl for mine due to its shape.

Put 2 Tbsp of salt and 3 Tbsp of baking soda into the foil covered dish.

Carefully pour 1 liter of boiling water into the dish, no more no less, it will bubble up.

Immediately dip your silver or jewelry into the liquid. Try to cover the items completely.

Let it sit a few minutes if your silver is as tarnished as mine was, otherwise just dip the items and watch the tarnish magically disappear. If there are any spots that didn’t come off, gently rub with paper towel. Wash the items with a mild soap and water, rinse well then dry.

  1. Baking soda is a great cleaner – I add it to the wash, I use it with citrus yo blend my glass top convection oven, to clean bottom of pots and pans.

I also mix it with sugar to get rid of ants ( the hope is, as the ants track through the mix gathering the sugar to return to the nest – by accident they with feed the queen some baking soda – which will case gas and the queen will explode- ants cannot pass gas or air)

I have a 1930 silver dollar and a 1925 silver quarter that are tarnished. Going to clean them up with your noted idea in your post. Thanks 👍🏼

    • I agree Randy, baking soda is amazing! I had a problem with ants getting into my hummingbird feeders (before I found the traps that won’t let them pass because of some kind of ring inside. I did the sugar and baking soda mixture, put it inside a pop can so the birds or other critters didn’t get to it and placed the can hole against the pole of the feeder. The ants took a detour, went into the can and back to the nest. Let me know how the cleaner works on the coins!

  2. I love these homemade fixes, Diane. Must feel so satisfying to do it with the things in your pantry. Probsbly better for you and the environment too!

    • Thank you Ab! Yes it is very satisfying especially when I used to buy the cleaner from the store and had to polish away. I had a few fork tines from my silverware that I wanted to dip and forgot. Guess I will make another batch. 🤣

  3. Wow, great recipe, thanks. I had a lot of silver jewelry and other stuff I had to clean before giving away. I can’t remember what DIY substance I used but this looks easier.

    • This is a good one. I changed it up a bit with great results. They said to pour the hot water over the silver then add the salt and baking soda mixture. Since I was cleaning a cup, I was afraid it would bubble out with the cup already in there. It still turned out perfectly and you saw how black it was before I cleaned it.

    • My mom made me help polish the silverware! Back then there was something like 3 steps. I think we soaked it first, rubbed a paste like on them then rubbed hard to get the tarnish off. Thank you Paul!

  4. Great info Diane. I remember by Grandma telling me this and it really works. I don’t have silver anymore, I used to have silver tea sets and things of that nature but over time, it has been sold or given away.

    • I only keep the tea pot set because my MIL gave it to me a few decades ago. I can’t in good faith get rid of it until she passes, she will be 97 in May. She also gave me silverware which I like to use. My kids complain when have a large family get together and I get out the good china and her silverware. They prefer throw away dishes.

      • I have my grandma‘s China too, but we never use it anymore. Yeah kids today like the cheap throwaway stuff lol no one wants our stuff that our mothers and grandmother‘s passed on to us which is sad really. It will probably all end up in landfill.☹️

      • My MIL (96) has really old china and I don’t want that either. I bought a good china set back in the 70’s, I don’t need anymore. I’m sure my kids will sell, donate or pitch my china too.

    • Thank you Joni! When I think back of all the money and time we spent on the store bought cleaner, I could smack myself. If I remember it was a 3 step process, soak, scrub the tarnish off then polish. This is so much easier.

      • I haven’t bought the silver cleaner in years….I remember my mother polishing her flatware before holidays and sometimes I would help her out, but now I don’t like the idea of using chemicals.

      • I agree Joni! If it’s something I have in my pantry I use it. The only processed food I use too much of is “cream of” soup and I have a recipe to make it. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Artificial pop is another pet peeve of mine and I don’t drink regular pop either. After getting hooked on water, it’s all I wan’t. Have a great day Joni!

    • It’s is actually fun and so satisfying to dip, wash and done. I remember the old days helping my mom clean hers and my own when I moved out. Placing silverware in is just as easy. You’re very welcome Annie!
