SPAM & Cheese Sandwich
Yes I did! I made a SPAM & Cheese Sandwich! I have never had SPAM before and my husband saw it at the grocery store and gave it to me to make something with it for my blog. I bought SPAM many decades ago and I was afraid to try it so I gave it away to a food drive! I have never heard anything bad about SPAM, I just didn’t know if I would like it.
According to http://www.mailguard.com, the word SPAM is derived from a contraction of “Spiced Ham”. During WWII and beyond, the word SPAM stood for “Special Processed American Meat”. The first can of SPAM was produced in 1937 when it became the USA’s biggest seller. When Americans went to WWII they were given 15 million cans of SPAM each week!
Ingredients
Take the SPAM out of the
can and slice it into 8 pieces.
Place the Spam slices on a large frying
pan that has been preheated over
medium heat. Do not add any oil.
Cook both sides until hot and they start
to get brown. Set aside and keep warm.
Butter one side of each piece of bread.
Place one piece of bread, butter
side down, in the same frying pan.
Add a piece of SPAM.
Place a slice of cheese to top. Repeat
with SPAM and another slice of cheese.
Top with the last piece of
buttered bread, butter side up.
Continue to cook until the bread
is a golden brown, turn the
sandwich over and brown
the other buttered side.
Slice diagonally and serve.

I love Fried Spam and Cheese Sandwiches. Especially now, with all the different “flavors” of Spam to change things up. Thanks for reminding me of a childhood favorite!

Oh, this makes me so happy. I love grilled or pan-seared Spam. I am the only one in my family that will eat it so I rarely buy it unless I just get a craving for it. Congrats on being brave Diane!
I will have to share this to prove I am not the only one who eats Spam. Wait, you didn’t say if you liked it? lol

Yes I did! I found it a little salty when I ate it plain but it was perfect as a sandwich. I learned from followers they make different flavors too! I had no idea!

I haven’t eaten spam since I was a young girl! Making it like a grilled cheese and ham sandwich seems right☺️

I couldn’t think of what else to do with it other than fried rice. I’m glad I did it this way, it was really good!

DH loves Spam! I can’t get past the soft feel of it myself, lol

Frying it took that softness away. I tried it before I fried it and I agree….too soft. But when I fried it, it carmelized it and made it more solid. I even ate it cold the next day!

My grandmother used to make things like this with spam when I was a kid so I was never as unsure about spam as I know a lot of others are! And it’s really popular in Hawaii and they have lots of creative recipes using it, even in sushi, oddly enough!

I am told Hawaii is the biggest user of SPAM.

This is so much nicer than the other kind of spam! 😂 I shall try a variation of this using luncheon meat, accompanied by some tomato soup for lunch today.

I don’t remember ever buying it, but I remember my Dad ate it occasionally when I was a kid, and I didn’t like it at all. Hubby just told me he likes it on sandwiches once in awhile, or fried for breakfast.

There you go, surprise your hubby with it! My hubby isn’t a lover of ham but he actually loved this sandwich! I was shocked to say the least.

It looks delicious Diane – many people eat fried bologna sandwiches too – but this looks good with the cheese too!

Every time we visit Amish Country, twice a year, my husband buys bologna. He loves fried bologna and I even did a post on it a while back. We ate it a lot when I was a child so it doesn’t really appeal to me anymore but my husband loves it!

Something about it browned and fried looks very appealing to me….but I could never work up the courage to actually eat it. 😄

It took me decades to try it. I don’t like it right out of the can but fried and on a sandwich was very good! I even ate the fried leftover pieces cold for lunch the next day and they were delicious!

You can do the same thing with ham. SPAM comes in a can and stores forever! Look in the canned meat aisle at the grocery store.
