Did You Know -Cooking Tips #3

- When you fry beef, sprinkle it with paprika for extra flavor and to make the beef golden brown.
- Always thaw beef in the refrigerator for maximum safety.
- Refrigerate poultry promptly after purchasing it. Keep it in the coldest section of the refrigerator for no more than two days or freeze for longer storage.
- When you microwave skinless chicken pieces, cover the dish with vented plastic wrap to keep the chicken moist.
- Enhance the flavor of fish and help to maintain the color by rubbing lemon juice on the fish before cooking it.
- To make it easier to remove the slime and scales when cleaning fish, submerge the fish in a bowl of apple cider vinegar (1%) for 5-15 minutes.
- If your bananas are too ripe to eat, throw them in the freezer, with the peel on, until it’s time to use them to bake banana bread or banana cake.
- When you bake bread, place a small oven safe dish with water in the oven to help keep the crust from getting too hard or too brown.
- Use vegetable shortening to grease pans instead of margarine or oil as they absorb more readily into the batter or dough. (Especially bread)
- Make your own self-rising flour by mixing 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt. Store in an air tight container.

These are wonderful tips!! So much to absorb.
Thank you so much, now if I could remember them all. Lol
Me too! Great facts to remember.
WOW! lots of good advice here.
Thank you!
Wow, here are so many good tips! I like the idea of how to make self-raising flour (I’m definitely going to save that).
Thank you! I agree with the flour. Last time I bought it I used it once and it expired before I used it again.
Interesting tip about the paprika. I use paprika in cooking to mimic the taste of bacon.
No wonder I love it so much! Lol
I love paprika on beef. I put it on chicken too 😉
It’s great on so many dishes and is so versatile.
Great tips as always Diane
Thank you Sheree!
Paprika is a secret weapon in so many dishes, especially if it is smoked.
It sure is and I love the color it gives food.
Lovely tips! I agree about the flavour boosting power of paprika and lemon. Such great ingredients. I love lime too for similar reasons.
Thank you Ab!
Lime should be used more!
I wish I liked it!
😌You bet sister!
Great tips! I made an Irish style beef stew that has paprika in it and it is a great combo with the beef. Oh yes the bananas – I do that every so often and John asked what type of microbiology experiment I am growing in the fridge. I put them in a plastic bag and let them ferment and it makes the most delicious banana bread with a sort of liquor created by the bananas (good rot juice!) 🙂
Hahaha John is as funny as you are! According to Food Network you don’t even need the bag, just put the banana in the freezer. Nope, not me either, in a bag it goes or it may get lost! Lol
As always, goddess-like comments!
Thank you JC and have a fantastic day!
Great info – also for extra soft cakes or breads remove 1 tablespoon of floor and replace it with 1 tablespoon cornstarch – works all the time
Interesting thank you Randy!
Your welcome
I find that when I use vegetable shortening (instead of butter or margarine) to grease pans when I bake cakes that they don’t stick to the pan as much.
I agree 100% Sheryl, shortening then dust with flour.
Well, I didn’t know that Diane – but that looks tasty in this picture.
Thank you Linda!
Wonderful tip, Diane!
Thank you Mitzy 🥰
