Did You Know -Cooking Tips #3

  1. When you fry beef, sprinkle it with paprika for extra flavor and to make the beef golden brown.
  2. Always thaw beef in the refrigerator for maximum safety.
  3. Refrigerate poultry promptly after purchasing it. Keep it in the coldest section of the refrigerator for no more than two days or freeze for longer storage.
  4. When you microwave skinless chicken pieces, cover the dish with vented plastic wrap to keep the chicken moist.
  5. Enhance the flavor of fish and help to maintain the color by rubbing lemon juice on the fish before cooking it.
  6. To make it easier to remove the slime and scales when cleaning fish, submerge the fish in a bowl of apple cider vinegar (1%) for 5-15 minutes.
  7. If your bananas are too ripe to eat, throw them in the freezer, with the peel on, until it’s time to use them to bake banana bread or banana cake.
  8. When you bake bread, place a small oven safe dish with water in the oven to help keep the crust from getting too hard or too brown.
  9. Use vegetable shortening to grease pans instead of margarine or oil as they absorb more readily into the batter or dough. (Especially bread)
  10. Make your own self-rising flour by mixing 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt. Store in an air tight container.

  1. Lovely tips! I agree about the flavour boosting power of paprika and lemon. Such great ingredients. I love lime too for similar reasons.

  2. Great tips! I made an Irish style beef stew that has paprika in it and it is a great combo with the beef. Oh yes the bananas – I do that every so often and John asked what type of microbiology experiment I am growing in the fridge. I put them in a plastic bag and let them ferment and it makes the most delicious banana bread with a sort of liquor created by the bananas (good rot juice!) 🙂

    • Hahaha John is as funny as you are! According to Food Network you don’t even need the bag, just put the banana in the freezer. Nope, not me either, in a bag it goes or it may get lost! Lol

  3. I find that when I use vegetable shortening (instead of butter or margarine) to grease pans when I bake cakes that they don’t stick to the pan as much.
