Baked Beans
Baked Beans have been a staple at our family functions since I was a kid! I still remember it was the only thing my Grandmother ever brought to family functions. She wasn’t a great cook but she fixed Baked Beans perfectly. I always wanted to eat the bacon that she put on the top of the beans. I no longer place the uncooked bacon on top of the Baked Beans though. Now I cook the bacon, break it into small pieces and mix it in with the beans before I bake it. Anybody else like to eat the leftover Baked Beans cold the next day?

baked beans depend totally on tomato sauce. Canned first in England for troops in war with Napoleon. went to Virginia to settlements who could grow better beans but the tomato sauce came from Italy via immigrants landed to give to beans a sauce as in all their meals. America took up the recipe and song about the British American war the ended with so many deserting posts to join the free Americans rather that be flogged by British law sang we took a little beans and we fought the bloody British at the battle of New Orleans. So be then beans in tomato had arrived. Potted history of the dish. I love baked beans in my own tomato sauce from ripe toms from greenhouse with chili too. On hot thick brown bread toast. Love it. Wholemeal bread is toasted buttered well beans and sauce with bite poured over it fried egg on top. I did it my way.

Me too and as I was writing this blog I wondered why I only make them for functions. They are great with family meals too.

Hi Kate! I’m glad somebody else loves them cold too. I honestly like them better cold than I do hot but both ways are delicious. As I said in the post, it triggers memories of my grandmother too so you’re welcome! I love how food brings back such wonderful family memories. Have a great weekend Kate!

Thanks Bernice! I am such a bacon junkie…lol We cook up 2#’s of bacon, crumble it and keep it in the freezer at all times. When I need bacon I take out what I need. This thaws in no time and the work is done cooking it. I keep filtered bacon grease in the refrigerator which I use for everything.
