Meatball Casserole

Meatballs tossed with penne pasta, sauce, seasonings, topped with cheese and baked in the oven. A meal easy enough for beginners to make and everyone will love.

Spray a 9” x 13” baking

dish with cooking oil.

In a large bowl combine the frozen

meatballs, spaghetti sauce, garlic powder,

onion powder, oregano and salt.

Cook the pasta according to the

package directions then drain.

Add the pasta to the meatballs

and sauce, toss to combine.

Place the meatball ingredients

into the prepared baking dish.

Spray a sheet of foil with cooking oil

and place the oil side down, on top

of the ingredients, then seal the edges.

Bake in a preheated 350º oven

for 30 minutes.

Discard the foil, sprinkle on the cheese

and bake another 5 minutes or

until the cheese melts.

Serve immediately and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 2# frozen cooked meatballs, keep frozen
  • 24 oz. spaghetti sauce (Use 36 oz. if you like it saucier) 
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1 tsp. salt, or to taste
  • 16 oz. penne pasta
  • 4 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese, or more if you prefer

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350º.
  2. Spray a 9” x 13” baking dish with cooking oil.
  3. Cook the penne pasta according to package directions then drain.
  4. In a large bowl add the spaghetti sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano and salt. Stir thoroughly then add the frozen meatballs and toss to coat the meatballs.
  5. Add the pasta to the meatballs and sauce then toss well to combine.
  6. Pour the ingredients into the prepared baking dish.
  7. Spray a sheet of foil with cooking oil. Lay the oil side down, on top of the ingredients then seal the foil to the baking dish edges.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes covered, discard the foil and sprinkle with the cheese.
  9. Place back in the oven, uncovered, for 5 minutes or until the cheese melts then serve.

  1. I add to minced meat chopped parsley flat leafy type from garden. Garlic powder and ginger crushed . Then mix in and make balls with icecream baller tool. So all same size with out the fuss. Never made this type of dish you have told us of now. Maybe Ill give it a try . Thank you for the recipe. Today made Queens scones and baked in oven lovely .Blackcurrant jam and clotted cream on top of each halved scone for what we English call cream tea at 4pm with Earl Grey tea or Morning Breakfast Assam and two other types of leaf ,goes so well with cream teas. Strawberry jam is usual but over last winter ate it all . Hope in retirement you are happy cooking . I retired in 2015 and best job yet .Gardening and cooking keep me active and feed

  2. Sounds great. I’ve been buying frozen meatballs from time to time, using them in salads or with rice and veggies, etc. I love their taste and ease.

  3. Oh yes, this appeals to my non-Italian, meatball-loving self. We have an Italian festival this weekend – not around me and besides, we’ve had a rainy weekend. Anyway, the menu and contests for meatball-eating and canolli-eating sounded delicious and fun.

  4. This is an old favourite! My grandmother used to make this quite a lot, especially when all of her 12 grandchildren visited her (but I think she made her own meatballs and used them immediately) … I like the idea of frozen meatballs (big time saver)!

    • I usually make meatballs and freeze them but I was out and needed a easy meal, so good! This makes a lot so I can see why your grandmother would feed all her grandchildren this.

    • This is very hearty with all the meatballs, my husband LOVED it and so did I. The leftovers were just as good but we added a little mare sauce as the pasta soaked up a lot of the sauce, enjoy Kev!
