The Big Texan Steak Ranch And Brewery: A Route 66 Must-Stop

On our vacation out west we discovered the fun at Big Texan Steak Ranch and Brewery on Rt 66 in Amarillo, Texas. Learn how to tackle the 72 oz steak challenge and enjoy delicious food.

The signs may need a touch up but the restaurant was wonderful!

I wonder if they are trying to keep the kids out?

Front of the restaurant .

This was so funny, it’s Texas!

Rooms next door to the restaurant were so bright and cheery.

A great way to scare the adults away.

Plenty to see while you wait.

What a talented and fun performer. He had no problem with me taking his picture as you can tell.

The walls, ceiling and decorations were all so unique.

Seating was upstairs and downstairs. They were packed yet it was a short wait to get in.

This is the timer for up to six people to try and get a free 72 ounce steak.

Here is how you can get a free steak…..72 ounces. I can’t imagine eating all that food let alone in an hour challenge.

Prices weren’t that bad and the food was delicious.

This was the only thing I didn’t care for, paper napkins.

One happy husband!

The standard salad.

That is a large jalapeño pepper, macaroni & cheese and steak, my husband loved it!

I’m a prime rib gal and this was cooked perfectly and delicious!
If you ever see a Big Texan Steak Ranch plan to stop!
My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people in Texas affected by the devastating flooding.

That is a very sensitive footnote. I think I would prefer your steak
Thank you Derrick!
What fun! I loved seeing your pictures. We agree – this was a highlight of our time in Amarillo. I would love to go back sometime. Thanks for sharing the photos!
You’re welcome! Did you go down the road to see the Cadillac cars?
wowza! that’s quite a place. I’ve seen it in movies and travel shows but love this close up glimpse. and yes, to those impacted by this terrible storm.
One place we will never forget. I sure wish there was one in Ohio. Thank you Beth!
Wow, looks like an amazing place for lunch! Love the big bear by the door as well LOL! Looks like you had a brilliant time 🙂
We really did but not for lunch, definitely for supper.lol
Outstanding place, wish I was there!!
It really is, I wish you could too!
I love steak and prime rib, my favourite comfort food. And my mouth is watering on the bus ride to work right now! You didn’t try the 72 ounce challenge?! I think I could do it if it was only the steak. But forget it with all the trimmings, that’s what you get full on! What a fun trip you two had and your hubby definitely looks very happy!
If you think about it, you could order it and eat a normal amount. Then take the rest home, you could feed all three of you the next day. For that size steak and all the extras, it wasn’t a bad price at all. She said it is one steak at 72 oz. I thought they would give you cut up pieces, nope!
I love a good steak, and these look terrific. I’ll pass on the 72 ounce challenge.
It is definitely worth going there. They had all different sizes.
I’ve been thinking I need to do a Route 66 trip some day. Thanks for sharing this.
Definitely do, it was so much fun. I will have more from Route 66 so check back on Wednesday’s.
Totally awesome! I love the over the top signage! I think I’ve convinced John to do a Route 66 roadtrip someday, I keep showing him fun photos from your posts 🙂
The hubby is having happy steak smiles!
Route 66 was so much fun Tierney. All the stops kept us from having a boring drive to the Grand Canyon. Because of all the stops it didn’t seem like we were in the car that long, except for the 24 hour trip home. My hubby is always happy when I feed him. Lol
John was drooling over the steak photos I showed him. He always says he could be a vegetarian if he could keep eating steak and bacon – ha!
That’s hilarious!
I’m loving living vicariously through you and your travels.
I love sharing our trip, it’s been 10 years since we had a vacation. Thank you Misty!
Looks like you two were “getting your kicks on Route 66, Texas style”!!!
Oh yes and that will be on another post. We had a blast! Next up, the Cadillac cars.
We pass by it four times a year on our seasonal trek, but have never stopped. We are always tired and have our dogs with us. We’ll have to work out a stop there. It looks like fun although I’m not interested in that huge steak.😳🤣
The 72 oz steak with all the side items too, isn’t a bad price. I bet people order it and just take the rest home. All that food could feed 4 people so that’s a cheap meal for steak! I hope you get a chance to stop there, you won’t forget it!
This looks like still another fun place along Route 66! Such a good deal on these large meals and the decor was fun and furry, along with all the other Texas-related items around the restaurant. The horns on the cars – funny, maybe the owners’ cars? Nice of the singer to pose for you as well. I am enjoying this series of stops on your vacation.
Thank you Linda! Next week the Cadillac cars.
Something to look forward to. 🙂
Wow, that was more than dinner, it looked like an experience. I want prime rib now.
We were there a long time. My patient husband waited for me to look at and take pictures outside. Once we were inside it drew me in even more. I didn’t take pictures of everything inside because they were going to seat us. They had a bakery and other things in the back but I didn’t get there, I think it was a bar.
Sounds like quite the place.
Looks like a ton of fun, Diane! 🙂
It was another fabulous vacation. Our last one was 10 years ago. Thank you Mitzy!
Wonderful, wonderful, Diane! You enjoying g your new kitchen? 🙂
Yes!!!! We love everything about it. Now that the kitchen is done, we just had a metal roof installed. Can’t wait to get the house old people ready. 🤣
Congratulations, Diane!
Thank you Mitzy!
72 ounce steak!! Holy cow lol. That place looks awesome! I love the signs
It was such a fun place inside and out! I wish somebody had attempted the steak challenge while we were there. The waitress said they get 4-6 people a day that try it.
I love steak but usually 6 or 8 ounces is more than enough for me!
I bet they go through a lot of take home containers!
😆
How fun for the both of you!
You are seeing some great country! The steak place looks like a fun place.
Your prime rib was exactly the way I like it! Yum!
Thank you Nancy, we were so fortunate not to get any rain except a little on the way home, so that was ok. Yes that is the only way I will eat prime rib too. My steaks are browned on the outside and still mooing on the inside. 🤣
Diane, Diane! oh my goodness – the prime rib has me drooling and the smiles of the performer and your hubs has left me with a huge smile. And great snapshots of TEXAS!
Thank you for your kind words! That stop was one of our favorites!!!
Those two words – steak and brewery – hmm, you don’t have to convince me at all that it would be worth stopping there! Though, I’m a little bit scared of that … what is it – a crocodile with boots on? It’s such a quirky place Diane – thank you for letting me explore another Route 66 diner with you!
You’re welcome Corna, it was our favorite place so far.
I am a Texan and I still haven’t be here! Ha!
No way! There are so many things to see in Texas. Our very last stop is at San Antonio but not yet!
I’m about to be on the move once again—and I’ll be writing about it soon! Texas is massive, and I know I’ll never see it all, but the way things are going, it looks like I’ll be seeing a lot more of it! In the meantime, I’ve really enjoyed following your travels. Looks like you’re headed closer to my neck of the woods! If you get the chance, make a stop in Gruene, TX—it’s definitely worth it!
We ended our trip in San Antonio. My husband said we could have spent so much time in Texas because of all there was to see. It is massive as we drove south to north and it took 2 days so we could sleep before our 24 hour drive back to Ohio. I hope it’s good and exciting news when you get on the move. I will be looking for your post!
I am working on a few posts, and I am excited to share!
I can’t wait!
We have been living on the road too! Not something I enjoy but I have been writing! Have posted schedules and ready to be published!! ❤️🩹🙌
How nice you can write on the road! Even more exciting is that it’s ready to publish!!! Wishing you the best of luck.
I am so excited to share the next few and all the things… and traveling we are doing as well! I have very much enjoyed reading and following along with post! I love it!
Can’t wait to see where you went! Thank you for your nice comment too.
Glad I saw this! Karla/Clampetts
It was such a fun and delicious place to see and eat at. I would definitely stop at one again.
A 6 ounce steak is more my speed. Seventy-two is way out of my league.
Isn’t that insane? I can’t imagine 72 oz steak and all the other food required! All that food would be enough for a family. I would eat a little, pay for the challenge and take it home for dinner with family. At the price of steak, that would be a cheap meal.
Loved this place when I was trucking across country <3
I bet! Heck I would have driven miles out of the way just to stop here and eat.
I would go hungry knowing I was stopping, to being unable to eat the meal that was free if you finished every bite 🙂
I would have gone there really hungry had I known we were stopping. That was a gigantic meal and I don’t know how anyone could eat that much. They said people succeed constantly. I wonder if they let people that succeed once, come back and try again. We had a route in mind but we had no idea about this place. The billboards sucked us in and were we glad! I could eat there once a week! Lol
It was fun in the 80’s, now I would never attempt and yes it was the billboards way back then and that big tall Texan who sucked me in 🙂
