Caramelized Onions
Caramelization is the browning of the natural sugar in the onions which results in a sweet nutty flavor and brown color. I ate this entire bowl of onions as my supper. I do not like raw onions, however, when you caramelize them they taste completely different. They are delicious on just about anything you would normally put onions on or eat them like I do, right out of a bowl.
Slice the ends off of the onions and peel.
Cut each onion in half.
Slice each half about 1/4” thick.
Separate the segments.
In a large skillet over medium low heat, melt the butter.
Add the onions, salt and pepper to taste.
Cook and toss until cooked
through and a golden brown.
Place onions on top of your favorite
food or eat right out of the bowl.

Yes thats the way to do them. Butter is best and simply stir about until cooked. I do this with pork chops as when the onions are lifted and warm in oven on low cook the pork chop in the remains or add more butter and fry until brown and lovely. Pile on the onions and potato mash .make gravy from the pan and its dinner tonight

Janet we were given SO many onions I am doing whatever I can to use them up before they go bad. I hate to waste food. Haha

It annoys me that lots of recipes don’t specify enough cooking time for onions. It makes such a difference to the finished dish.

That is so funny you say that. I asked my husband to make these and when he said they were ready I said OK I will finish cooking them now. Did you know grilled onions are cooked at a medium high heat and taste more like raw onions where caramelized onions are cooked at medium low for up to an hour to caramelize and do not taste like raw onions?

I love carmelized onions on burgers and steak. Do you use a certain kind of onion Diane? I have used yellow onions and Spanish, but just wondering if there is one you prefer.

I enjoy them all when they are caramelized. Usually I use Spanish too but we were given a huge box of these onions. Time for onion rings…lol

Too late I did. Then I was stupid enough to do it again a few days later.

Yes, we love caramelised onions (just had burgers the other night with some of these on top). But it’s always a crying affair in the kitchen when I’m cutting onions … I’ve tried it several ways, but with no success! So, now the kitchen towel paper (or tissue box) is close by whenever it’s time to slice an onion 😊.

The only time they didn’t make me cry was when I wore contacts. I was cutting up green onions today and they did too! That was a first. I guess we will both have to stick to a tissue or paper towel!

Are these Spanish onions? Do you like the Vidalia onions Diane? Bet they would taste good being caramelized.

Yes, they are so sweet … you must make Onion Straws or a Bloomin’ Onion!

We bought one of the gadgets to make a blooming onion a few years ago and hated it. I will take regular breaded and fried onion rings anytime.

I think it is a lot of work to make it isn’t it Diane? We went a few times to Outback Steakhouse just for the blooming onion, but then some other place started having it – Chili’s or Applebees – they were called “onion petals” so we just had them instead.

They are a lot of work and messy!

Yes, too much work to enjoy just a few minutes – better to get them at a restaurant!

I need to practice cooking this more. I keep burning them. Maybe it’s my fire.

You need to cook them medium low or low and for a long time. They can cook up to 70 minutes but it only took me about 20 minutes and I turn mine frequently. It is worth the wait!

Haha. That’s it, Diane! I got zero patience. I could be standing in front of my frying pan, waiting and texting on my phone at the same time. Lol.
