Caramelized Onions

Caramelization is the browning of the natural sugar in the onions which results in a sweet nutty flavor and brown color. I ate this entire bowl of onions as my supper. I do not like raw onions, however, when you caramelize them they taste completely different. They are delicious on just about anything you would normally put onions on or eat them like I do, right out of a bowl.

  1. Yes thats the way to do them. Butter is best and simply stir about until cooked. I do this with pork chops as when the onions are lifted and warm in oven on low cook the pork chop in the remains or add more butter and fry until brown and lovely. Pile on the onions and potato mash .make gravy from the pan and its dinner tonight

  2. It annoys me that lots of recipes don’t specify enough cooking time for onions. It makes such a difference to the finished dish.

    • That is so funny you say that. I asked my husband to make these and when he said they were ready I said OK I will finish cooking them now. Did you know grilled onions are cooked at a medium high heat and taste more like raw onions where caramelized onions are cooked at medium low for up to an hour to caramelize and do not taste like raw onions?

  3. I love carmelized onions on burgers and steak. Do you use a certain kind of onion Diane? I have used yellow onions and Spanish, but just wondering if there is one you prefer.

  4. I love the aroma and taste of caramelizes onions. Go so well with hamburgers and hotdogs. Perfect for summer!

  5. Yes, we love caramelised onions (just had burgers the other night with some of these on top). But it’s always a crying affair in the kitchen when I’m cutting onions … I’ve tried it several ways, but with no success! So, now the kitchen towel paper (or tissue box) is close by whenever it’s time to slice an onion 😊.

    • The only time they didn’t make me cry was when I wore contacts. I was cutting up green onions today and they did too! That was a first. I guess we will both have to stick to a tissue or paper towel!

    • You need to cook them medium low or low and for a long time. They can cook up to 70 minutes but it only took me about 20 minutes and I turn mine frequently. It is worth the wait!

      • Haha. That’s it, Diane! I got zero patience. I could be standing in front of my frying pan, waiting and texting on my phone at the same time. Lol.
