Easy Pizza Dough

This is my favorite pizza dough. It is so much better tasting and easier to work with than that canned stuff! I like to make mine up ahead of time and put it in the refrigerator until I make my pizza later that day or even the next day. You can even put it in the freezer. To use it after freezing it, let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

Put your warm water (105 – 110 degrees)

into a small bowl. Add the sugar and

the yeast and stir until the yeast dissolves.

Set aside for 5 minutes. The yeast will

create a foam layer on top. If it

doesn’t then you have bad yeast.

Spray a medium bowl with cooking oil.

Whisk together the flour and the salt.

Put the flour mixture into a medium bowl.

Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture.

Use a wooden spoon and mix

together to make a dough.

Scrape the dough into the bowl that

you sprayed with cooking oil.

Turn the dough over so the cooking

spray coats both sides of the dough.

Cover with a towel and let sit for 20 minutes.

Usually I use a dish towel but this time

I just used a paper towel.

Punch down the dough and if it is too sticky

add a little flour so it doesn’t stick to your

hands. Knead it a couple of times and

form a ball. At this point it’s ready to be

rolled out and placed onto your pizza pan.

This makes a nice size crust. I put mine on

a large cookie sheet. You may get two

crusts out of it if you like it thin and smaller.

I like to make mine earlier in the day and

clean up. After I punch it down I wrap it

in plastic wrap and put it in a plastic bag

then place it in the refrigerator until I am

ready to make my pizza. It may continue to

rise in the refrigerator which is why I put

it in a plastic bag. I don’t want it

popping out and drying out.

  1. Thank you drear friend I have tried many recipes but never seem to nail that base. Yours sounds good so will give it all my love and try. I have considered buying a plate dish thing for making it.I have seen even stone plates used but price was silly to my thinking so avoided firestone base .May hope this works with nice thing base with golden thick edge they call deep pan for some reason . It is useful for left over chicken with olives and Italian cheese.

  3. If you make the dough a day or two ahead of time and put it in a ziplock bag (put a little bit of oil in the bag so the dough doesn’t stick to it) and in the fridge, the dough gets better. Take it out a couple of hours before you want to use it to bring to room temperature.

    • Great idea! Mine was in the refrigerator for about 24 hours. I don’t have any problem getting it out of the bag but I do have to keep punching it down as it really continues to rise! I agree, bringing it to room temperature is a must! Thank you so much for you advice!

    • Yes we also normally knead the dough too. This is an easy dough recipe and doesn’t require kneading but if you want to you can. This rises in 20 minutes but when I leave it over night in the refrigerator it continues to rise. It is a fascinating recipe and a whole lot less work. Give it a try sometime and see what you think.

  4. Canned pizza dough? I didn’t know that existed. Maybe it is like the exploding biscuits or croissants?
I make my own also. I use 1 1/2 cup water for two round trays, adding flour until I can get it out of the bowl to knead. The yeast has been dissolved in the water, about 1 tsp., no sugar, but I add 2 Tbsp olive oil. Either whole wheat flour or half white. Wheat benefits from fermentation, that is why you find it better after a long rise.

    • Yes we have pre-made pizza dough in a can! You peel off the label and smack the can on the counter and it pops open with the dough inside. Makes it nice but doesn’t even compare to homemade! I think all dough is better the longer it sits. I like to make mine and refrigerate it. Thank you for sharing your way. I find it fascinating how differently food can be made.

  5. There’s a lot you can do with this! Biscuits, calzones, even sandwich bread… It’d be good to make and then freeze for future use.

  6. Great recipe. For your own information though, pizza dough also makes a great bread. And my grandmother used to roll out the dough, cut out circles, cut a donut hole in the middle and then fry the dough in oil. They would puff up. Then she would drain them, cool them just a bit and roll them in brown sugar and cinnamon. Best donuts ever!

  7. I will definitely try this! We make homemade pizza regularly but I buy Naan bread. I have not been able to find/buy yeast since late February ☹️ I really want to make my own.

    • I don’t know why they don’t put more in the stores. I bought mine at an Amish bulk food store before the virus hit. I store it in the freezer and it keeps longer. Good luck I hope you can find some.
