Did You Know – Meaning Of Fat, Sodium & Fiber On Labels
Do you know what it means when the food labels give the reference of FAT, SODIUM and FIBER? You may be surprised by the numbers below.

FAT FREE: Less than 0.5 g of fat per serving.
SATURATED FAT FREE: Less than 0.5 g per serving and the level of saturated fatty acids does not exceed 1% of total fat.
LOW FAT: 3 g less per serving…or per 50 g of the food if serving is 30 g or less, or less than 2 tablespoons.
LOW SATURATED FAT: 1 g or less per serving and not more than 15% of calories from saturated fatty acids.
REDUCED FAT: At least 25% less per serving than reference food.

SODIUM FREE: Less than 5 mg per serving.
LOW SODIUM: 140 mg or less per serving or per 50 g of food.
VERY LOW SODIUM: 35 mg or less.
REDUCED OR LESS SODIUM: At least 25% less per serving than reference food.

HIGH FIBER: 5 g or more per serving. Foods making this claim must meet the definition for low fat or the level of fat must appear next to the high fiber claim.
GOOD SOURCE OF FIBER: 2.5 g to 4.9 g of fiber per serving.
MORE OR ADDED FIBER: At least 25% more fiber than reference food.

Useful read.
Thank you!
Enlightening
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing Ned!
A handy guide!
Thank you Dorothy!
I don’t think I can keep all that in my head. But I get the general gist of it! 🙂 Thanks, Diane.
I know, it was a bit overwhelming. I was surprised how they can publish it is zero fat when there is fat and so on. Thank you Betty!
thank you –
You are very welcome Beth! Have a great week!
Interesting to learn that something that’s “Free” is actually not completely free of it!
Exactly! By the time you read all the labels it’s still not exact.
Interesting! You have to pay attention to everything these days … and everything is smaller too!
Right Linda!
Look at my Pepperidge Farm bread … smaller size, lots of holes and a smaller size loaf. Also, the latest trick, was what used to be the “heel” is now one of the pieces of bread attached to the heel. You could choke a horse on it!
Nothing stays the same anymore! Terry said his bread went up to almost double.
It’s ridiculous – Pepperidge Farm does not have the same quality they once had and prices are outrageous. I tried the Brownberry thin-sliced bread and it has a funny taste to me and I’m not a picky eater.
I forgot to tell you, if you have a Panera near by, they sell sourdough.
I didn’t know that, thank you. I have not been there in ages. My mom and I used to like their pumpkin muffin tops back in the day.
We all need to become food scientists!
Right Linda! It just blows my mind how they can legally post things like fat free, for example, and it really isn’t.
Labels and our food industry need to start over!
I agree Mary!
I will never remember all these numbers! With my next shopping trip, I will make a printout of your post and take it with me.
They make it so confusing, I usually stick to what common sense tells me.
