Cadillac Cars and Midpoint Cafe-Route 66

We arrived at the Cadillac Cars and the street was lined with parked cars. The concrete barrier and pavement were covered in spray paint. It was fun reading where people came from and their messages.

This is where you bought the spray paint and how they make their money to keep going. By the looks of the truck and trailer, they must make some good money!

The cars were way back in the middle of a field. From where we had to park it was a bit of a walk to get there. That is the road way in the background, where we parked.

I love seeing them from a distance and up close.

I don’t know how they thought up this attraction but people loved spray painting the cars.

We didn’t spray paint, it was cold, windy and we didn’t feel like getting paint on us. We had to stay upwind to take pictures.

There was so much paint on the cars that people climbed inside the cars to paint there too. Do you see the person inside this car?

It was fun seeing what people painted on the cars, the kids and adults loved painting them.

My husband and I both enjoyed seeing the cars.

Our next stop was the Midpoint Cafe.

This sign was directly across the street from the cafe. My hubby and miles of wind turbines behind him.

They even painted the street! The white line behind the route sign is the midpoint line.

Beautiful painted mural.

The gas station on the right side of the cafe.

The cafe was well maintained outside. When we first arrived, one of the signs was falling off. By the time we were leaving, a woman was out there with a ladder and nailed it back up.

This was on the left side of the cafe.

Now to head inside the cafe.

I really enjoyed looking at everything.

The people were so nice. She didn’t mind me taking pictures even though we didn’t eat there, however, I did spend money in their gift shop.

How cool is this firetruck?

This is pretty much our route. We started in Ohio but ended west at the Grand Canyon. We headed south then drove to San Antonio Texas. This sign was on the cafes hall wall.
More pictures next week on Wednesday.

Purposeful graffiti
Yes especially in the road. It was fun seeing what people painted, on the cars and the road.
So cool how they’ve turned these cars into standing works of art that are constantly evolving like this. So vibrant and colourful as well. What a unique thing to discover on your journey.
This was one of those attractions I had to see up close. It was fun watching the kids and adults spray painting away. Thank you Paul!
this is so cool!
That cafe had so much to look at, what a fun time. Thank you Beth!
Your Route 66 adventure continues to uncover such fun and varied discoveries, Diane! This attraction looks like so much fun and I can see why kids enjoy it too. I would’ve done the same as you too, admire from afar and away from the breeze! 😆
As far back as the cars are in the field, they must have plenty of windy days, however, by the looks of the gallons of spray paint it didn’t deter most people. Lol
Thanks so much Ned!
Love the vintage cafe sign!
There were so many fun things to see, we enjoyed this stop. Ok we have enjoyed all the stops so far. Lol
I’ve been by Cadillac Cars multiple times but have never stopped, and I haven’t been to Adrian. The cafe looks like a fun place to eat.
Well now you know what they look like up close so you don’t need to stop. 🤣 It was even a free activity unless you bought their paint. It was as fun watching the people painting as it was seeing the cars. The one person inside the car was having a blast. I’m sure it must be impossible finding a bare spot to paint.
Cadillac Ranch – this is what a road trip is all about!
We have enjoyed every stop on Rt 66! My husband drove out west when he was younger, by himself. He drove by these sightseeing places and never got out of the car. Not on my watch! He told me he was so happy I wanted to go inside all these places. He had no idea how unique and fun they were.
What a fun trip! Thanks for sharing! Karla/Clampetts
You’re welcome! I spelled your name wrong on your website, sorry about that!
That’s so random but so cool.
I know! How did anyone think of doing that to Cadillac cars!
I think I’ve heard of the Cadillacs nose down before, but never saw photos of them before. How fun to visit here and I would not have spray painted in the wind either and end up with paint all over myself. I like that they a mid-point sign for Route 66 and that you took a picture of it. The Midpoint Cafe looks like a fun place. That’s nice they let you take pictures of inside without eating. I like all the memorabilia, including the fire truck. Did you get an ornament in the gift shop?
Both places were very unique but the Midpoint had so much to see. I sure did get an ornament there! Unfortunately there wasn’t a gift shop for the cars.
The Midpoint was a fun idea to do that. When you get near Christmas, one of the Wednesdays that you would normally use for this trip, you should take a photo of the tree with your memorabilia from prior trips.
I did find all the ornaments I put away but I may take a picture of them for my last vacation post (if I remember). Lol
That would be fun – I hope you do it. My intention was to put up the tree with the ornaments – either my three-foot tall work tree or our miniature Hallmark tree with the mini ornaments. The clock is ticking on that project, but I’ll put SOMETHING up this year and keep that promise to myself.
Definitely do Linda, you will enjoy seeing it again.
Yes, I could always just do that one, but I’m hoping to find some pictures I took when I decorated the house back in the day. I have pictures I took because, even though it is a small house, I did spend an entire day decorating and have not done so since 2008. So I didn’t forget what went where, I took photos … not sure if they are downstairs in the Rubbermaid tubs or somewhere else, a cupboard, tucked with the Christmas tree? Who knows, but I aim to find them. 🙂
Haha you are so funny, you will find them.
Well I hope so as I have something I have to dig out for my annual feature “Fifty Years Ago” – it was a publication I authored in college and spent all Summer working on it (it was before computers, so I had to use a proportional typewriter to get a justified right margin). I went in on my day off and would count out words and letters so when I went in that one day and a couple of evenings, I could at least type a few paragraphs – what a pain. So I have a scanner and want to take it out – it is in the closet with the Christmas tree and all the seasonal decorations – it will take hours to get everything out, but I want to scan in the cover at least and so I want to find the pictures to do at the same time. I have not used the scanner since 2017 when I did all the scrapbooks and albums – hopefully I remember how to use it.
I have never used a scanner except the one on my printer. Can’t wait to see the post!
When I got my original laptop in 2009 I got an HP printer. I had Geek Squad come in and configure the wireless and also the laptop/printer. I bought them both at Radio Shack. He told me the printer didn’t work and to take it back. I took it back with the laptop and they said it worked. I never got the printer to work, just the scanner. I scanned in a bunch of photos to put into an album on Facebook after I joined there in 2009. The scanner worked but was grainy for some reason. So I bought an Epson flatbed scanner just to use and it worked wonderfully, so I scanned in all kinds of photos – scrapbooks, vacation photos, my mom’s old albums. It took all of the four-day Thanksgiving holiday in 2017. I hope it still works after all these years. The software would be for a Windows 7 laptop, so I can’t use it on this Windows 11, nor the Windows 10 either. I have to uncover a ton of stuff in the closet to 1) get to the scanner and 2) get to the boxes (there are six) with albums/scrapbooks in them. I have to do it soon – before the holidays at any rate. I have stuff piled in that closet of the small Christmas tree and all the other season’s seasonal decor. I used to decorate for all the seasons for years. It will make a bigger mess. The clothes have to go – they are hanging in the closet too and should go as I’ll never wear dress clothes like that again.
As for the scanner, does it have ink in it? If it does it is probably dried up. If it doesn’t print that’s probably the reason. Once you get everything out of the closet, you will be excited to decorate! It’s always fun to see what was hidden away.
No, no ink in the scanner – when I scanned in the pictures on the HP Printer/Scanner back in 2010, the pictures were not clear, so I decided to get the Epson flatbed scanner. But I have no room, nor reason really, to leave it out, so I packed it away. Just today I found the scanner software – it was with my digital compact camera instructions. I don’t think it is compatible with Windows 11 though. Now to find the scanner. 🙂 It is packed under so much stuff … the problem was that I had boxes filled with yearbooks, scrapbooks, albums all in the bottom of the cupboard in the TV room/den.
When I took the albums out to scan in some pics after some high school friends asked me to post pics on Facebook (I’ve not seen these people since graduation in 1973), I opened the boxes and some of the albums were starting to fall apart – bigtime. The plastic overlay on the pages no longer stayed down and the binding on the side of the scrapbooks had come apart … I put them there for safekeeping so couldn’t believe it. They were all Hallmark albums too except my mom’s albums which were black construction paper with tissue paper overlay and photo corners … so most of the old pics came out great. I have a pic of my mom as a baby and she would have been 100 years old next February – it is crisp and clear. Anyway, so I bought the Epson scanner. I was thinking I might use it to scan in paintings … I took photos of them and cropped them for the blog post to get out the background (I lay them on the table where I paint). They have handheld scanners too – I wish I had gotten that … this was a tough job as I had to piece together some pics … the albums are not in final shape and I have all raw images to tweak as I go along. I wanted to go thru my blog and make a “clean copy” what I’ve used … good luck getting that done!
I hope one day it looks like something in here again for the holidays.
Wow, I had forgotten about the black construction paper with the little triangles you stuck the corners of the pictures in. What a blast from the past Linda. I hope you get the scanner to work the way you want. That’s amazing your mom would be coming up on 100 years old in February. My son turned 43 on the 7th, that makes me feel so old. Lol
Yes, they worked well, you wet them and they stuck and that album was in fine shape, but my albums had fallen apart. I was thinking that Epson saying that some adapters would overheat and not to use them (you have to check the model number of the adapter) … I never remember it overheating and I used that scanner for many hours in the day back in 2017 when I scanned in everything, but I just left it set up on a table until the project was finished and never felt the adapter … yikes … that is scary. I’m figuring mine is not one of the problem adapter, but remember how hot the Christmas tree adapter got for the bear tree? I don’t feel comfortable using it and that is the same thing – it was placed on a table and I was not feeling the adapter … I only did this one as I think my hand brushed against it. I know the laptop adapters are warm to the touch, but not hot like that Christmas tree adapter. Well, you shouldn’t think of yourself as old Diane … after all, you are younger than me. My mom would have turned 100 on Valentine’s Day 2026 … she was 30 years older than me.
I have a whole drawer full of adapters, I don’t know why I keep them. Lol Your mom’s birthday was easy to remember.
Yes, we keep everything and can’t find anything. Well me anyway. Maybe I have to go to an electronics store and see if I can buy the same size adapter for both things if the scanner is problematic. Or my friend Amazon.
I’m sure you can, good luck!
I have seen the Cadillacs! They are so cool!
You have seen some cool things on rte 66!
I have always wanted to see them. We will never go back but worth it just once.
I hear ya!
Those spray-painted Cadillacs are definitely one of the most unique attractions I have ever seen! Route 66 must be the most interesting route in the world to drive! The things you see … 😉.
It sure is! Route 66 runs through 8 states, is 2,448 miles (3,429 kilometers) long and if you drove it without stopping would take 30-40 hours. I had heard about the Cadillacs and had to see them.
I love that idea of painting those cars and that cafe! I would have looked at everything too
We don’t plan on going back as we want to explore new places in the US. I didn’t want to miss something and regret it so we planned to go nice and slow to see everything we wanted to see.
Yes, that’s a good idea. Clint and I also try to do that. We usually don’t go back to places we’ve been either.
We went to Cadillac Ranch a couple of years ago. We did a little spray painting. The selfie we took there went on our Christmas card that year.
That is awesome and a great idea!
The car art was very interesting – it reminded me of Carhenge in Nebraska that we stopped at last week while on our road trip!
OK you got my interest up and I had to Google Carhenge. That is so cool, I would have definitely stopped to see it too and you’re right, very similar. They must have welded the cars on top to the cars on bottom?
I think so, it was really fascinating and I will have a future post about it 🙂
I can’t wait until you do!
What fun! I’ve seen pics of the Cadillacs, maybe in tv shows or something? Cool you saw them IRL and did some Route 66. Sounds like a great road trip.
Thank you it was the best trip!
Wow, that is an interesting exhibit, Diane. I wonder who thought it up, and added the spray paint activity. I can imagine kids loving that. Ray and I traveled a lot on Route 66, but don’t remember the Midway Cafe. You had a wonderful trip.
I think there were more adults there painting than kids. I was surprised it was in the middle of a field. The guy must have made good money selling all the spray cans of paint. We did have a wonderful trip, with all the bad weather before we left and after we were home, we were very blessed.
