Did You Know – Cooking Tips #6

- Always chill juices and sodas before adding them to beverage recipes.
- Store ground coffee in the refrigerator or freezer to keep it fresh.
- Seeds and nuts, both shelled and unshelled, are keep best and longest when stored in the freezer. Unshelled nuts crack more easily when frozen. Nuts and seeds can be used directly from the freezer.
- To prevent cheese from sticking to a grater, spray the grater with cooking spray first.
- Rub fresh lemon juice on your hands to remove the scent of onion.
- Instant potatoes flakes are a good stew thickener.
- Three large ribs of celery, chopped and added to about 2 cups of cooked dried beans (navy, brown, pinto), will make the beans easier to digest.
- When cooking vegetables that grow above ground, the rule of thumb is to boil them without a cover.
- A tablespoon of sugar added to the water when cooking greens helps the vegetables retain their fresh color.
- Never soak vegetables after slicing them; they will lose much of their nutritional value.

You’re welcome Derrick.
More words if wisdom Diane
Thank you Sheree
Thanks for the tips, Diane. I have to ask, is your key image AI generated? I noticed your credit line and had to ask!
Yes it is. When I post the Did You Know posts I don’t have a picture to take since it is just informative and not a recipe I made. WP AI has some weird pictures though and it’s hard to generate one that is accurate.
Thank you for all the tips, Diane.
You’re very welcome Janet!
Great tips Diane ! I particularly like the one about using lemon juice after cutting onions. Sometimes it seems the smell never goes away
Thank you Susan! I sent for lemon dish soap that smells amazing. We use that on our hands and the cutting board that is used for onion or anything else that smells bad.
Lots of good hints here Diane!
Thank you Linda!
#7 makes it sound like you put the celery in after the beans are cooked. I’m not trying to be picky, but just to understand. You have read Ron Douglas’ original statement. Any thoughts on when the celery would be added? Thanks, Diane.
You can add the celery to the beans when they are partially cooked or almost done cooking Linda. I hope this helps and if you try it let me know if it works.
There are always lemons in our kitchen … yes, to add to dishes, but also to rub on my hands when I’m done working with onions. And I learned from my mum to store seeds and nuts in the fridge — that’s a really good tip. Love all the other tips too.
Smart lady, thank you Corna!
More great information – Thanks, Diane!
You’re welcome and have a great day!
