Pumpkin Shaped Rice Krispie Treats

I made these for my grandkids. If I would have had more time I would have decorated them with icing and added leaves. My husband was walking out the door to pick up my granddaughter from a football game so it saved me a trip dropping them off then. Use your imagination and have fun decorating or leave them just like this.

Place waxed paper on the counter near the stovetop.

In a large heavy bottom pot, over low heat, melt the butter.

Pour the marshmallows in the pot and stir.

Quickly add the food coloring and stir constantly.

Stir until the marshmallows melt completely and the food coloring is thoroughly mixed in.

Add the Rice Krispies and toss with a large spoon until combined.

Once you can touch them, spray your hands with cooking spray and form the Rice Krispies into the shape of a pumpkin, they can be different sizes. Stick a Combo into the top for the stem and squeeze the Rice Krispies around the Combo. Make sure the Rice Krispies have set up some first or they will fall apart. Keep squeezing them into the shape until they are completely set, moving from one to the next one and repeat. This can be messy and definitely not for the little kids to do.

  1. I wondered what the “stem” was when I first saw them. I thought at first it was an olive –
a good idea using a Combo. I’ve not had Combos or Rice Krispie treats in a while. Once I told my mom we could make Rice Krispie Christmas Wreaths … saw them in a magazine. She said “I’ll make you Rice Krispie treats – that’s too messy.” She told me I could make them (rare for her to say that) … OMG, what a mistake and a mess. I don’t remember what the “ribbon” part of the wreath was made of. I think they ended up as “balls” more than “wreaths” to be honest.

    • I wish I would have had time to decorate them with frosting, they would have really been cute but Terry was headed out to pick up our granddaughter and it saved me a trip. I figured they would devour them so fast it wouldn’t matter. Lol I remember the wreaths made out of corn flakes (I think) I never saw them made out of Rice Krispie treats. They are messy but fun too.

      • They were still cute – yes, it was Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, not Rice Krispies. Yes, what a mess it was with the dye and gooey everywhere. My mom, like you, always like making her assortment of Christmas cookies every year and started soon after Thanksgiving rolling them out. So I decided I would try and make things easier for her – big mistake. I bought her a cookie gun with shapes for the cookies. She looked at it and said something about not piddling around with that and the cookie would be very tiny. I insisted, so she made up some dough for me to “play with” – another mistake. The press part with the starburst (the first one we tried) got gummed up and everything that came out you had to push the handle hard and the cookies were misshapen … another brilliant idea gone bad.

      • Hahaha That one made me laugh Linda. My MIL gave me one of those cookie presses too and I have never used it. You and your mom were quite the pair! I love everything about her!

      • That’s funny Diane – You obviously were not going to mess with those piddly cookies. I thought it was such a great idea and Mom just poo-pooed the idea from the start. I swear what came out looked about the size of the chocolate kisses you put on your Peanut Blossom cookies at Christmas, swirly like that.

      • Haha I think that is why I never made them, too small. I would like to try making them, just once, but when I make cookies I use an ice cream scoop. 🤣

  2. I was wondering what a “combo” is until I read the description under your ingredients – at first I thought it’s maybe an olive. I love Rice Krispies (and of course marshmallows too). I think wonderful treat is going to be waiting for Berto soon that he’s never tasted – thanks to you Diane!

    • No way he’s never had a Rice Krispie treat? They are easy if you pour them into a 9”x13” dish and just press them down. Google “Original Rice Krispie Treats” and you will see how easy they are unless you are making the pumpkins. Combo’s are pretzels filled with peanut butter, cheese, pizza flavor and more. They are so addicting and I will only buy a single serving bag.

      • No, we’ve never eaten Rice Krispie treats. And the next problem is the way you describe Combo’s, I don’t think we’re going to get them here in our stores. You guys have all the good stuff over there!!

      • Make them this way for the first time. They only take about 10 minutes and are so easy and no Combo’s needed. You could still add the orange gel food coloring to the marshmallow before they melt if you want to be festive.
