Red-bellied Woodpecker

I took these pictures with my phone through my living room window. I had to share this beautiful bird! Look close at what he does with his tail, for balance, underneath the feeder.

  1. I hade a red breasted robin make a nest in my cherry 🍒 tree one year. That year we had no problem from squirrels or other birds. I also have a bird feeder but squirrels 🐿️ always get to it first.

    • We get tons of birds, all varieties. I have a large wooden cabana and we have to go out daily to remove at least one corner of nesting material. I hung these reflective spinners all over but they figured out they can fly under them. Lol I am going to try and wedge the foam pool noodles in the corners this year. 🤞🏻

  2. Great shot of a lovely bird . We have similar here but so rare to spot them from house. One landed in a Silver Birch near my head as i was weeding.I looked up just to see him fly off . You got him in your lens first class.Well done you.

    • Thank you!!! They only stop at the feeder occasionally, probably because they can’t find bugs and are hungry. I was so surprised that they ate sunflower seeds.

    • Thank you Maggie, do you get any other kinds of woodpeckers? There are so many beautiful varieties. We have seen one other kind and my son gets one we have never seen, however, he is an hour west of us.

  3. Wow! Those are phenomenal pictures of such a beautiful bird. Smart balance in a cozy home

  4. Beautiful photos! I wonder why it is called “red bellied”, since the red is only on its head.

    • The young birds red belly doesn’t get red until later. It also said you can’t see it unless they hang upside down. My opinion is that they already have a red headed woodpecker name so they squinted hard and called this one a red-bellied. 🤣

  5. Beautiful bird and great photos. It’s impressive you took those through a window and with a phone camera. I love your bird feeder, so cute!

  6. One of my favorite birds! Great photos! I’m fascinated at their ability to turn their heads almost upside down in order to get the seed they want.

    • Thank you Janet! The little birds leave all the shells of the sunflower seeds on the platform so he and the blue jays peck out the hole in the feeder to get more seed. The way they tuck their tail under the feeder for balance fascinates me. It looks like they bend their body in half.

  7. Great birds! I have one coming to one feeder right now, too, here in New Hampshire. I always love watching him break open a seed. Great pictures, by the way!

  8. What great pictures, Diane. I get a lot of birds, but I haven’t seen any of those. I do hear woodpeckers in the distance but with only an apple tree in my yard, they don’t visit.

  9. I pulled down 3 beginnings of nests yesterday under my overhand. Not sure what to use. I hung a plastic owl, but that didn’t work for long. Birds are smart.

    • I know what you mean Carla! The best thing I ever did was wedging balloons in the corners but we get so much wind they didn’t last long. I hung these spinning silver reflective things in 9 spots in the cabana but they are getting use to them and still going in the cabana. We remove the nests daily too. Right now it’s the robins then later it’s the sparrows. My next solution will be to put something in the corners where they make the nests like a cut off piece of a pool noodle. I’ll try anything. Lol
