Did You Know – Almond Milk

Did you ever wonder how they get milk from almonds? Well it definitely doesn’t come from a cow. Check out how easy it is to make your own Almond Milk.

  1. Place 1 cup of raw almonds in a glass bowl and add enough cool water to cover them by at least 1” then soak them overnight in the refrigerator.
  2. Drain the almonds well and discard the water.
  3. In a blender place the almonds with 4 cups of fresh water 1-2 large Medjool pitted dates for some sweetness, 1 tsp. vanilla for more flavor and a pinch of sea salt. Blend on high for 2 minutes or until smooth and creamy.
  4. Place a colander in a bowl, place cheesecloth or a thin dish towel in the colander. Pour the almond mixture into the cheesecloth or towel allowing the liquid to drain through. Pull up the four corners and squeeze the cheesecloth or towel removing all of the liquid making sure the solids stay in the towel. Discard the solids and then refrigerate the liquid in a clean covered jar or bottle. Shake well before drinking.
  5. How long it will keep in the refrigerator depends on things like the freshness of your ingredients, the temperature of your refrigerator and how sterile your equipment is but generally it will last 3-4 days.

  1. Thanks Diane! I drink almond milk instead of cow milk to reduce my caloric and fat intake and substitute vitamins and protein in other sources. So this is helpful to reinforce my dietary practices!

I also buy the store bought one. I don’t think I have the patience to make my own. 😆

    • You’re welcome Ab! From what I have been told, squeezing the liquid out of the cloth can be challenging, but you can’t get it any fresher. I love how healthy you eat, I wish I had your will power!

  2. You always have to wonder about the latest food trends. Thanks for stating the pros and cons so clearly.

  3. Wow! a ton of information! Thanks.
The recipe sounds much more appetizing than the almond milk I have purchased at the store – which, btw, was less than satisfying, in my opinion. I used it on cereal and it was “okay”. But UGH! in my tea. Blahhh!
Of course, I tried it because I thought I was making a healthy choice. Thanks for making me feel good about drinking MILK – which I happen to love. 🙂

  4. I have made almond milk in the past. Don’t enjoy time consuming to filter out almond pieces after blending. I like the idea of adding dates. 😋👍🏼
