Crispy, delicious and straight from the Air Fryer! Fish fillets coated in flour, egg and breading then sprayed with cooking oil and air fried without all that greasy mess. My son gave us a bag of walleye that he caught and the Air Fryer didn’t disappoint!

Spray the basket with cooking oil on the bottom and sides.

My son hooked us on this breading that we buy at Kroger’s.

You can use any kind that is your favorite though.

Place the fish onto a plate that is covered with waxed paper.

Spray the fish on top with cooking oil making sure every

part has oil. Don’t do this until you are ready to put the

fish into the air fryer. If you leave any dry breading

it won’t brown or taste good. It will seem like

a lot of spray but this step is important.

Carefully place the fish, sprayed side down, into

the basket trying to keep them from touching.

Completely spray the top side making

sure all of the breading has oil.

Air Fry at 400 degrees for 7 minutes.

If fish is thin you may want to reduce to 5 minutes.

Turn the fish over and cook for 4 minutes

more or until both side are crispy.

Do you know what part of the fish this is?

This is the cheeks of the walleye. My son

hooked me on these tender, delicious little

nuggets from the walleye. If you ever get the

chance to try the cheeks of fish you will love them!

Ingredients

  • 1# fish fillets
  • 1 egg whisked with 1 Tbsp. water
  • 1-2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1-2 cups fish breading (or your favorite)
  • Spray oil

Directions

  1. Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400 degrees.
  2. Spray the basket with cooking oil on the bottom and sides.
  3. Place the flour, egg and breading into three different bowls or plates.
  4. Coat a fish fillet with flour.
  5. Coat the fillet with the egg mixture, leaving no dry spots or the breading won’t stick.
  6. Coat the fillet with the breading.
  7. Place fillets onto a waxed paper covered plate. Repeat steps 4-6 until all of the fillets are coated.
  8. Just before you are ready to air fry, spray the entire top of each fillet with the cooking oil until there is no dry breading showing.
  9. Place the fillets, sprayed side down, onto the bottom of the basket without touching each other.
  10. Spray the entire top of each fillet in the air fryer with the cooking oil until there is no dry breading showing.
  11. Air fry at 400 degrees for 7 minutes. If your fillets are thin you may want to reduce the time.
  12. Turn the fillets over and air fry another 4 minutes or until crispy. Keep an eye on them as the thinner fillets will get done before the thicker fillets and you will need to remove them first.
  13. Serve immediately or keep warm until they are all cooked.

  1. This air fryer is truly remarkable! I love the idea of doing this WITHOUT the mess. It’s always the amount of clearing up afterwards that puts me off haha. I am going to have to get one! Is it like most things – you get what you pay for? Or is the technology etc the same whatever?

    • It definitely can cook fish but keep in mine as wonderful as they are, you won’t be able to cook large quantities all at once. It does well for my husband, me and the grandkids. Otherwise you have to cook in batches if you are entertaining.

  2. Coincidentally, we had fried fish fillet from the restaurant last night. Lightly salted and peppered. I think yours look better through the Air Fryer!

    • I’m actually not a big lover of fish except for walleye and my favorite is perch. But I have to eat it with a lot of tartar sauce. I have fished for perch my entire life. My dad ran a bait store and we fished almost every weekend. Then when I got older I bought a boat and fished from it. Oh and I love smoked catfish!

  3. Walleye cheeks – that is interesting and kind of funny. Who knew? These look good and this would appeal to me bigtime Diane. You may know I don’t watch TV as I cancelled my cable years ago, but I got an Amazon Prime subscription and have been enjoying watching TV by streaming. Last night they were advertising the Ninja Foodi – your model I’m sure as it showed all it could do. And, they made it all look easy.

    • The Foodi is easy but I still haven’t been brave enough to use the pressure cooker…lol The ONLY thing I don’t like about it is that you have to change lids for the different methods of cooking. The lids are big and I keep the one to pressure cook in the basement so I am always avoiding cooking with it. I just throw everything in the air fryer…lol I had never heard of fish having cheek meat in my entire life! My son had us over for dinner and said try these mom and they were so good.

      • I’d be reluctant to use the pressure cooker too Diane – I’d be afraid the contents would get too hot and the pot lid would head straight to the ceiling!

      • That can’t happen the way it locks in place but I am afraid of ruining the food in it. I have figured out the perfect way to cook on and in a stove, slow cooker and air fryer is coming along nicely but I know nothing of how to use a pressure cooker. Lol

      • Okay, I thought that was your worry; I know my mom expressed that concern about pressure cookers one time and never owned one for that reason.

      • The old ones had a weight that rattled and todays are way different although they still cook the same. There is no reason I shouldn’t try it, which I will eventually, other than failure! Haha

      • I thought of you today Diane – I heard a little story on the news that there is a chicken shortage these days and they said “it’s all those people buying chicken to use in their air fryers!” 🙂

      • Yes, serious Diane. I heard it on the radio and just Googled for an article (that you don’t have to pay to read – grrr) … the link is at the end and this is what they say in this paragraph. Good thing Terry scooped them up for you. I know you love wings. They said consumers as well as restaurants are having a difficult time and they mention the air fryer at the end of the paragraph:
        *****
“Plus, they align with consumer desire for comfort food during the pandemic. Chicken production remained steady in 2020, and as long as people are sitting around watching TV and maybe drinking a beer, wings will remain in the game. Don’t forget the air fryer revolution, either.”
        https://www.newsweek.com/chicken-wing-shortage-us-1585923

      • Better get Terry to get you more … I heard another story yesterday about the chicken sandwich wars had created some of the chicken shortage problem.

      • When I told him what you said about the air fryer he said he heard it was due to the fast food restaurants having the chicken war…lol

      • That’s funny – I believe it is both. They said everyone is cocooning and using their air fryers and other gizmos and gadgets and like them so much, they’ll keep using them. Look how many people bought bread machines or started baking their own bread. My neighbor and her husband got a bread machine for Christmas one year and they were retired and made a fresh loaf of bread every morning – soon they gained weight and put the breadmaker up in the attic out of sight. 🙂

  4. I love fish! This sounds really nice. I’ve not got an air fryer but sounds like a nice way to cook fish. I tend to just do fish fillets in a pan with a dash of oil – face down first and then turning half way through – with either place fillets or lemon soles (or dabs) as we tend to call them here in UK. Your method with the air fryer sounds like it would work well with Cod or Haddock. Mmmm, might have to get me a air fryer and try it. 🙂

    • I have never tried fish unbreaded in my air fryer but if I would I would spray the pan and fish with cooking oil, season and air fry. Spraying the fish should help to crisp it up. I hope this helps.
