Regrowing Celery-Part 2

The picture at the top of the blog is the end result of regrowing the celery. I didn’t know if it would work or not since it started out in just water. I planted it in dirt and it grew a little more. Then we planted it in the garden and just left it alone. I never expected it to live through the heat of the summer and the most I expected is if it would just stay alive. I forgot about it amongst all of the other garden growth and when we pulled it out it had gone to seed. The stalks were very tasty but they looked different from the originally celery we bought from the store which I find fascinating.

That’s pretty cool! I save seeds from vegetables I bought and grow them. It’s like a gift that keeps on giving and I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth out of the product.

I would have loved to see what one stalk looked like.
It was very strange looking. The stalks were very ribbed, not smooth like it was when we bought it from the store.

I did green onions too at the same time I started this one but we ate them already…lol
Interesting! I might give it a try. I bet the store-bought stalks look different, because the are not “free-ranging”, get less light are are primed.
You may be right because it looked like an entirely different plant.

Be sure to dry the leaves for celery flakes. It makes a great cooking herb. I have a how to do that posted on my blog. I have a convection oven and I set it at the lowest temp. Maybe I should try growing some also. Thanks for sharing.
Oh yes do grow some! I dehydrate everything in my Excalibur Dehydrator. I’ve dried all of my herbs, mushrooms, jalapeños, green pepper, apple slices, peeps, jerky……etc.
You can do that with stalks of romaine lettuce too!
Oh oh now that’s on my list for next year!
It does work in the house as well – you can practice over the Winter. 🙂 I worried about having fresh greens for my canary in Winter as I don’t like to drive in bad weather, so I tried growing it inside. I got small stalks, enough to give him a few greens in a pinch, but outside it works fine too. I Googled to find how to grow it inside as I was not a believer that it worked. You soak the stalk in water til it takes root, then plant it in dirt. Voila!
Oh my goodness!! That stalk of celery is impressive and how funny thatit tastes differentfrom the original. A couple of times I’ve regrown celery tops in water as a science project with my kids, but I haven’t ever planted it in dirt. I need more patience. Thanks for sharing the picture and for this great idea!!

I tried this also. Mine was also had small shoots. I didn’t think they were good to eat just the stalks, but worked well for cooking. I also replant the green onions.
I did the green onions too and they got huge. I neglected to check then frequently because I didn’t think they would grow…lol However big they got they were still good! Have a great weekend!
