Happy Labor Day – 2025

Do you know why we celebrate Labor Day in September? For one, September 5, 1882 is when over 10,000 workers had a planned unpaid leave from work.
These 10,000 individuals organized a march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City. Though, it’s important to note that the date for this event wasn’t chosen for any specific reason.
Peter J. McGuire, the organizer of the parade on that day, stated that the reason for choosing September was only due to the fact that it fell “between the Fourth of July holiday and Thanksgiving,” according to Brittanica.
In 1884, the Knights of Labor union decided that they would continue on with the September tradition, just changing the date to be “every first Monday” instead of being locked down to September 5th.
Have a safe and fun Labor Day.

Happy Labour Day, Diane!
Thank you Ab!
I was just in the detroit parade today, supporting them
What fun and kudos to you Beth! What costume did you wear? Lol
I was with a local chapter of a national group supporting them carrying a large banner
Kudos to you Beth!
Enjoy your Labor Day Goddess.
Thank you JC, spent the day with my daughter and granddaughter, I got a break from cooking. I hope you had a wonderful Labor Day.
That’s interesting Diane – I always thought workers needed more than the few long holiday weekends we get every year. Especially since we have several days off from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, then have to wait until Memorial Day weekend for a few days off. No Easter Monday or Good Friday off and it just seems like that is way too long, especially since you deal with endless Winter on top of it. Hope you had a restful Labor Day.
Thank you Linda I spent some time with my granddaughter and daughter with no picnic. Nice and relaxing!!! The place I work at has amazing holidays off, it’s called retirement. 🤣
Retirement does have its bonuses doesn’t it Diane? I am glad you had a restful Labor Day, not in the kitchen making a picnic feast.
Thank you Linda!
Great info about Labor Day –
Tonight on Idahos channel 7 KTTV (were I live) they shared that June 28, 1894, former President Grover Cleveland signed a law, during the violent Pullman Strike, making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Also Idaho began officially recognizing Labor Day when it was designated as a state holiday in 1887 (7 years before it was a National Holiday) making it one of the first states to do so, alongside Oregon.
Thank you, very interesting!
Happy Labor Day (which I would probably have spelled ‘labour’ … but I guess, then it’s not really American 😉).
Thank you I took the day off for once.
I hoped you enjoyed the holiday Diane! We got home Friday from our trip but headed out locally to bike and enjoy the beautiful weather. Thanks for the info on why Labour Day was started, very interesting
I did have a nice holiday Susan. I didn’t do anything. No cooking, grilling not a thing and it was a nice break.
Fantastic !
I didn’t know the history of Labor Day, thank you for sharing 🌺
