Did You Know – Storing Strawberries

Did you know you can keep strawberries fresh for up to two weeks with this simple bath method using vinegar and proper storage tips?
- Make a bath for the strawberries. In a large bowl add 3 parts water to 1 part white vinegar.
- Soak the whole berries with the green cap still attached for 10 minutes.
- Drain and rinse the strawberries well under cool running water.
- Thoroughly pat the strawberries dry.
- Place the whole strawberries into a sealable container lined with paper towel.
- Leave the lid partially open so moisture doesn’t get trapped inside then place it in the refrigerator.

A good idea, but they probably wouldn’t last long enough for that to be necessary in our household 🙂
Same here Derrick except for when I’m making something with them a few days away from when we pick or purchase them. Thank you Derrick!
Thanks for this tip. I get weary of throwing half the carton of strawberries away.
You’re welcome Katelon! Have you seen the cost of them, just awful!
Interesting tips, Diane! I can’t have strawberries for more than 4-5 days without them starting to fuzzy and moldy. So have to enjoy them and pack them for T’s lunches while they’re fresh. 🍓
I’m sure T doesn’t mind! I’m hoping my own strawberries don’t get devoured by the birds so I can make my pie! I picked and froze my rhubarb the first week of May.
I will definitely give this a try!
I don’t know how I went all these years and never knew about this. I hope it works good for you!
Thank you Ned!
Thanks for this. I have been having storage berry problems.
You’re welcome and I hope this fixes it, they are so expensive you don’t want to waste them.
Thanks for the tip. It is so frustrating to have mold growing secretly in the middle of a box of strawberries.
Yes! I always check fruit and vegetables really good when I shop, however, my husband loves grocery shopping so I get what he brings home. I have thrown so much produce right in the trash and I hate waste. Lol
You always have great tips 😊
Awe thank you for your kind words Susan!
We usually have to eat our strawberries within 2 days, or they have to be thrown away. I am going to save this post right now – thanks Diane!
I have used the vinegar bath for the strawberries if we eat them plain. When I need them for a dessert, I can’t always get to them in time so this method helps to save them.
I’ll keep your instructions for reference, but not for this year. At $20 per gallon locally, I won’t be buying strawberries this spring.
I know, I couldn’t believe how much they are. I went to buy a quart at Trader Joe’s and the first one I picked up had mold, probably because nobody is buying them at that price. I’m hoping to get enough from my small garden crop to at least make a pie, if the birds don’t get there first. Lol
Thanks, Diane! I’m going to keep this in mind when we pick strawberries in the next month or so.
I am hoping to get enough from my garden to make my annual rhubarb/strawberry pie. Usually the birds get up before me and they are gone. Lol
very helpful tip and vinegar is so natural – so extra good
Thank you for your comment!
Great to read your food education again now that I’ve returned to blogging 🙂
It’s so nice to have you back!
Thanks so much, glad to be back 🙂
I didn’t know that Diane – boy those strawberries look delicious!
I always seem to make something with strawberries 4-5 days after we buy them. This way of storage really helps. I’m hoping the birds don’t eat my strawberries in our garden this year.
I bought strawberries one time since I’ve been alone and I was more adventurous with food back then, but I decided I was going to make strawberry shortcake … I thought it was hot out and the A/C was on and the basement was cold, so I put the package of really pretty strawberries down there as I had a lot of stuff in the fridge including Cool Whip – anyway, they were all moldy. I had to have Cool Whip and that yellow sponge cake on its own.
Oh no Linda! I was at Trader Joe’s yesterday and was going to buy a quart and the second quart I looked at had fuzzy mold. I thought they would be great since there is such a big turn over at this store. I walked away without buying a thing.
I have never been to a Trader Joe. I agree, if one was moldy, the other one would have quickly followed suit!
Nope, I did not know! Fortunately, with four kids, keeping strawberries is never a problem. 😛
I bet!
