Did You Know – Lettuce Mix

A close-up view of a mix of green and red salad greens, showcasing their vibrant colors and textures.

With the price of food at the grocery store we need to store it properly. To make salad greens last until we can finish eating them and before they turn slimy, keep reading. We like to buy the big bags of salad greens because they are a better value, and my husband eats salad every day.

The trick to making them last longer is to give them room to breathe. They are usually packed tightly making no room for air to circulate which causes them to wilt and then turn slimy.

When you get home, pour the entire container of lettuce into a large bowl. Toss the leaves with your hands, picking out any wilted or bad ones, so they are loose and not packed. Pour them into two containers, without packing them. Lay a sheet of paper towel on top of the lettuce in each container to absorb any excess moisture.

Because lettuce can go bad quickly, pour the lettuce into another bowl daily and throw away any that are beginning to wilt, then place them back in the refrigerator. Following these steps will keep your lettuce leaves edible for a much longer time.

  1. Great tip. For years I’ve been wrapping my lettuce heads in a light kitchen towel and turning the plastic bag inside out every few days. It really works.

    • Paper towels work with so many things Linda. I make deviled eggs the day before I need them. I put the whites of the eggs in my egg dish, lay paper towel on top and cover. The next day I fill them with the yolk mixture that I stored in a ziploc bag a day earlier. The paper towel keeps the whites from collecting moisture the same as it does the lettuce.

  2. My husband is the lettuce police. Once we buy a bag, it’s salad every night until it’s gone. Then it’s green beans or broccoli until we shop again. I love your tips, but I think he’s going to stick to his salad regime.

    • Don’t change if it works and makes your hubby happy. 😉 I hate when you buy it and it is already starting to go bad. Unfortunately we can’t see inside the bag they come in. Have a great day Betty.

  3. It’s getting to be warmer, so salads are all the more appealing. Yes, slimy lettuce is the worst. It was bad when I was still buying the bagged salads for my canary – it was eating a huge dinner salad or every day until it went bad.

  4. Thanks for the tips! We eat salad every day, too, and I hate to see good greens go bad.

My sister grows her own greens, and before we take a road trip, we pick a large batch of them, wash them, put them in a pillowcase, and swing it around until the greens are dry. 😆 We fill a few bags with them and stick them in the fridge in the motor home, and we have salads for the whole trip. 😋
