Second New Kitchen Remodel Update

All I thought about when the cabinets were delivered was where in the world is all this stuff going to go in my small kitchen? There is still a huge cabinet in the garage plus all the appliances.

The cabinets are all custom made with so many fun features that I have never had before. Our old kitchen was put in when the house was built in the 70’s.

Everything has gone as planned until the dreaded cabinet inspection where we had to open every one of those boxes and make sure nothing was damaged within 5 days and with the contractor.

We found seven cabinets that were deeply scratched, dinged and one cabinet cut wrong so the wooden pegs wouldn’t insert all the way in leaving a gap and they pulled right out. I am old enough to remember the quality control companies used to have, I wish we could bring back those days!

I love the cabinets, they are dovetail and very well made. The issues were mostly from shipping and cosmetic, however, when you pay what we did for custom cabinets, I won’t accept the dings and deep scratches. We paid for putty and small touch up paint for the future dings we do, but why should I use it on brand new cabinets?

The next step was to email pictures with SKU information and hope they send replacements which will take another 4-6 weeks. I did that and of course they needed a more detailed explanation than just the pictures of every scratch and gouge I already sent. So I spent another hour emailing what they wanted and I am still waiting to hear back from them.

We have the counter top company coming to measure for the template soon with an install date of June 27th. The one good thing about the damaged cabinets is that only one of the bottom cabinets was damaged and it is in the island. Our contractor will install all of the lower cabinets so the template countertop measure can go forward and we can get back in business with a sink, faucet, dishwasher and stove. The island countertop can be installed at a later date when the cabinet is replaced.

I don’t know how people build new houses after realizing all there is to do with only a kitchen!

Stay tuned for the Third New Kitchen Remodel Update.

    • It will, but the cabinets have really messed with the contractors time line and it will cost us even more money. When they send new cabinets, and they better, it will be only the outer shell. We will have to pay the contractor to take all the guts and doors out of the damaged ones and reinstall in the new ones. It’s just frustrating because there is no more “The customer is always right” like back in my younger days.

  1. I paid a carpenter to come to build mine .Cost less than machine made kitchen and out of oak . 4000 euro six weeks made here and in his workshops .All praise his work .Best deal now worries and no mess

  2. It is really sad when this happens. We ordered a new table from Pottery Barn (never again) and it arrived, carton intact, heavily swathed in styrofoam. When we unwrapped it, there was a huge hunk gouged out of the bottom support, and several deep scratches. These had to be noticed buy someone, but they wrapped the whole thing up and shipped it anyway.
Because it was beyond the 30 days or whatever it was (end of Covid and our flooring was delayed by months so that is why we did not open the massive package) the company said they could do nothing, Had conversations with about eight different people at the company, but they wouldn’t honor anything. Not a very good way of doing business. You were wise to check everything!

    • I’m so sorry, how sad Dorothy! We just had another issue. I ordered and picked up all the molding. One group of molding was in a package. The contractor took all the molding and 7 new doors out to our pole barn to spray paint. We have lighting out there but the pole barn is 40 x 60 so the lighting is way up and isn’t perfect. He put all the molding on saw horses and painted it. Today he brought the molding to the garage and could see where the packaged molding surface was all messed up. He said he never buys packaged because you can’t see what you are buying and they put all their crap molding on the bottom in the packages. Now we need to buy more! This is becoming quite the learning experience.

  3. I can only imagine how disappointed, frustrated, and perhaps angry (?) you were to discover so much damaged to your custom-made cabinets! The delay in getting replacements only adds salt to the wound. I’m sorry your kitchen remodel has had this setback, but at least the sink and countertop parts of the project can proceed. Our kitchen remodel in 2015 went smoothly but still pushed my nerves to the limit. It’s difficult to go through but the finished product is so worth it!

    • I don’t get mad, it wouldn’t change anything but I can be a pain for them! 🤣 I emailed the company that made my design almost daily made it clear I will accept nothing but new replacements. I can be a real pain! Anyhow, after another email yesterday and insisting they call the manufacturer and get me an answer, I was told the new cabinet boxes will be shipped the first week in July. I am very happy but I have to pay the contractor to remove all the hardware, shelving and doors to every piece and then reinstall them in the new cabinet boxes. This should cost another $100. But, water over the dam, I get my cabinets (hopefully not damaged this time).

  4. It’s going to be beautiful Diane! It’s frustrating to run into issues like damaged cabinets but it will all be worth it in the end. I’m so excited for you. We did ours a few years ago and there is not a morning that I don’t appreciate the beauty of the restructured space. Hugs, C

    • I remember you posting about your remodel. Didn’t you have something about a large table in your post? This wouldn’t have been so bad if it didn’t mess up the timing of the contractor and the counters. I have had the cabinets for 2 weeks now and the company still hasn’t given me an answer. It is so frustrating but I guarantee BBB will be contacted if they don’t replace these cabinets soon. My contractor has another job, bigger than mine, in July which means we will have to wait even longer.

  5. Why am I not surprised in this day and age? What a chore to have to study each cabinet, keep a record, take pictures and then have to explain each one to the cabinet maker? Good grief.

    • Right and why did they ship them that way to begin with. I would understand if they were cheap cabinets but they weren’t cheap and they were custom made, very frustrating.

    • I agree Danny! I just want an answer and it better be they are sending replacements. But yes, it is very exciting. I can’t believe all the special things they can put in the cabinets now. I think the huge corner lazy Susan is my favorite. Gone are the days that I ask my husband to reach way back into the cabinet for a pan I can’t reach.

  6. I’m sorry there are so many issues with your cabinets, but it is good you knew the time limits on your complaints. It would be tempting to leave them boxed up until you were ready to install them. Keep the faith that when all is finished it will be the kitchen of your dreams!😇

  7. Very frustrating Diane and I agree with you about the quality control issue … everyone is too busy or distracted to care. The biggest problem as I see it is workers don’t take pride in their products, nor their work anymore.

  8. It’s so frustrating to receive things damaged, and have to go through the whole process of justifying replacement and waiting for new shipments! I hope the rest of the project from this point forward, will be smooth sailing with no other problems, and I know it will all be so wonderful when it is all in place!!

    • If for some reason I can’t get any results (so far I have not) at least I do have the damaged cabinets. I would have to use touch up paint and my contractor said he could repair the cabinet with the too long pegs by sanding them down. It’s just not what I should have to do to brand new cabinets! Thank you Derrick, I hope your fingers do the trick.

  9. I am sorry about your cabinets, it’s frustrating to get things and find them damaged and then have to wait some more. It will look beautiful when finished though !

  10. You are very right to demand quality after all that you are investing into this remodel. It will be all worth it in the end, Diane. Hang in there. Can’t wait to see the finished product!

  11. So sorry to hear about the cabinets. Last time we had a new kitchen fitted everything was checked three times, also by the construction firm. Nothing was damaged and everything was perfect until the last construction day when they found out that one of the electricity sockets was in the wrong place. Meaning it was exactly where it should be according to the technical drawings. The mistake was in the drawings and because everything was checked based on these drawings it was impossible to notice at an earlier stage. It took a bit of extra time, effort and patience but now all is great. Good luck with following up and monitoring everything! We’re sure the result will be as you want it.

    • I’m glad you were able to work it out. Nothing goes perfectly, we have to expect that. As long as the end result is what we want all is good. Thank you for your kind words!

  12. I remember when we had our house built in 2000 … and I said, never again (though, I was very pleased with the result)! I’m sure you’re disappointed now that you have to wait longer, because of some of those cabinets, but at the end of the project, you’re going to stand back and think: It was all worth it!

    • I know it will but I would never do it again unless I didn’t live here. Our house is a maze right now and adding an additional 5-6 weeks because of the cabinets has made it so difficult. It has inconvenienced us and the contractor. Having no kitchen sink and water is the worse part, my poor husband carries dishes downstairs to wash and dry every day. The only savior has been the throw away plates and silverware. It will be worth it in the end!

  13. I’m really sorry to read about all this hassle, Diane. A remodel is hard enough without all this stress. Our dining room light over the table had to be returned. Our refrigerator didn’t cool and it was a big process to get it replaced. It was all worth it in the end, as you well know, but getting there wasn’t always easy. I sure hope everything works out for you all in the timeframe you and your contractor need. Can’t wait for those final pictures!

    • I went into this, never before remodeling project, with blinders on. I thought since I saved for 3 years so I could pay cash for everything and designed it for well over 1 year that everything would go smoothly, boy was I wrong! 🤣 Now that I hear stories like yours and many others, I realize this is normal. My biggest fear is that something won’t work because I purchased everything months ago. I bought 90% of everything when it went on sale so my fingers are crossed. I know the refrigerator works because we are using it but we haven’t hooked up the water line yet as it is sitting in my dining room. The range is amazing but I haven’t broiled or tried the convection oven yet. Then there will be the faucet, dishwasher, microwave and all the lighting. We will deal with one hookup at a time and keep our fingers crossed. Whatever happens it will work itself out, it always does. How could it not with God by our side! Thank you Patty! 🥰
