Did You Know – Eggs

How many times have you had raw eggs and you didn’t know if they had gone bad or not? Did you know that all you have to do is place each egg in a glass with cool water to find out? If the egg falls to the bottom of the glass, it is ok to use. If it floats it is usually a bad egg and you need to throw it away. However, it might be ok when it floats as long as you crack it open and it doesn’t have any unusual odor or odd color, but my preference is that it will get thrown away.

Thanks!
easy peasy
Yes
Nice post
Thank you!
Another excellent tip
Thank you!
This advice is brilliant, I just have to remember which is bad, sinking or floating…
Think of it this way, when it goes bad it creates excess air which makes it float.
That makes sense, Diane… and easy to remember!
Great handy tip, always good to know a way to check if you’re not sure.
I agree, I would hate to waste all the ingredients after putting in a bad egg.
Yes, I did know but it’s a very useful tip Diane
Hard to teach you anything! 🤣 Thank you
I don’t know about that Diane
That’s an interesting trick! We usually stick to the expiration date of the carton but this is a good trick to know as well in case we go past the date!
If they last that long! Lol Thank you Ab!
Yet another great tip, Diane💜
Thank you Jonetta!
Thanks for the tip. I’d throw it away, too. I’d hate to crack it open and find out it was rotten. I’ll bet the smell would be horrific!
As soon as ours get close to the date on the carton my husband makes an omelette and hard boiled eggs. I don’t think I have ever smelled a rotten egg, they are gone before they go bad. But I won’t risk ruining my recipe by chancing it so I use the fresh eggs and let him have the old ones. 😉
I didn’t know this, Diane. Thanks for sharing a great tip.
You’re welcome!
Who knew? Great advice Diane, we go through eggs so fast, I can’t imagine one ever going bad. Hugs, C
Yes same here. If the expiration date is getting close my husband makes himself omelettes.
I didn’t know that Diane – thanks for sharing that info!
You’re very welcome Linda!
I use rotten eggs for the garden. The result was nice. I have plenty of herbs for cooking. Of course, it smells really bad!
I saw on tv where they cracked a good egg then put the egg and the shell it the hole before planting every plant. Do you do that or put the rotten egg on top of the ground? I bet it did smell bad. Lol
It’s just for show. To use egg shells, there will be a long process or you mince them in the food blender, then bury underground. We do the same with the rotten eggs and it smells awful
I bet but worth the results! Thank you
Oh, I hate the smell of a rotten egg! I always break it into a separate bowl to make sure that if it’s rotten, it doesn’t mix with the other ingredients (but will remember your tip next time). Thank you Diane 🥚.
My eggs don’t usually get a chance to go bad but I still do the same as you do with the bowl.
Isn’t that a great way to check on the freshness of an egg, Diane? I must say though for me, if the egg floats to the top, I give it to the dogs. It is bobs around half-way-in-between, I eat it that day. 🙂
The dogs, it doesn’t make them sick? Do you cook it first or add it to their food raw, I’m intrigued.
Well, really, Diane, if it smelled really awful, I’d throw it out. But do not forget, dogs are scavengers–they eat the most awful of things! 🙂
So true!
Thanks for the smart tip!
You’re welcome
My mother taught me this trick.
Smart lady!
