Wilted Lettuce Salad
Fresh Fall lettuce from our garden inspired me to make this Wilted Lettuce Salad. I remember my Mom making this when I was a kid. You can use any type of lettuce for this recipe. The hot dressing drizzled over the lettuce is what gives it the name Wilted Lettuce Salad.
Cook bacon until crisp, let cool then crumble.
To the hot bacon grease add the rest of the ingredients except the lettuce. Stir and cook until the sugar and salt are dissolved. Add bacon, stir and remove from the heat.
Place lettuce on a dish. Drizzle hot dressing with bacon over the lettuce and serve.
Wilted Lettuce Salad
8-10 cups lettuce, any type
5 pieces of bacon
1/4 cup white vinegar
2 green onion, slice into small slices
1 Tbl sugar
3 Tbl water
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
In a large frying pan, cook the bacon until crisp. Using tongs remove cooked bacon and put on a paper towel lined plate. Let cool then crumble.
To the frying pan with the bacon grease add salt, pepper, white vinegar, green onion, sugar and water. Stir and heat until the sugar and salt are completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and add crumbled bacon. Drizzle over the lettuce, mix well and serve.
My grandma and mom loved this type of salad. Thank you for reminding me about it!
You’re welcome! It is definitely a recipe from the past and I love it!
Its very healthy
Nothing like picking lettuce from the garden! Thanks!
Omg, my mom used to make this! Looks good!
Isn’t funny how food brings back our childhood memories! Every year when my husband grows this type of lettuce it reminds me of my Mom and this recipe too.
Yay! I love salad with bacon!
Wait…..what about the Oreo’s…lol
I love bacon in a salad too, but I’ve never tried a lettuce salad with a warm dressing. I’ll try it one day.
I only like it with our garden lettuce. Probably because that’s how I grew up eating it. Worth a try as it is very good!
Lovely- And this salad is so good! I first got the recipe from a friend in North Carolina who called “Kilt Lettuce”. She had the recipe down from her mother and grandmother. Her name for it had me thrown for awhile 😉
Thanks! It is definitely a blast from the past for many people.
We call this hot salad in Central PA.
Wow never heard it called that very interesting!

Thank you it is a must have in the summer with our garden lettuce.
Give me a shout next summer… 😊👍🏼
