Did You Know – Largest Gingerbread House
Guinness Worl Record

The largest gingerbread house in the world came in at 35.8 million calories. It covered an area of 2,520 square feet, or nearly the size of a tennis court. It was approximately 60 feet long, 42 feet wide, 20 feet high and 39,201 cubic feet. The gingerbread house was built in Bryan Texas, 90 miles northwest of Houston, and has been declared the largest gingerbread house ever by Guinness World Records on November 30, 2013.
The house was built by the Traditions Club near Texas A&M University to help raise money for a trauma center at the regional St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Visitors going to see the house were able to meet Santa Claus, in exchange for a donation to St Joseph’s Hospital in order to raise money to build a new trauma center.
The recipe is simple. Mix 1,800 pounds of butter, 2,925 pounds of brown sugar, 7,200 eggs, 7,200 pounds all-purpose flour, 1,080 ounces ground ginger and a few other ingredients, bake and form into panels for mounting.
The bakers tried to cut back on the butter and baking soda as much as possible to help the gingerbread better stand up to the weather.
The edible and aromatic panels, icing and candy were mounted over the wooden frame and stood up to the Texas sun as well as a few storms until it was dismantled.
“One problem we did not anticipate was bees on warm days,” Horton said. “They have been coming over, getting so much sugar and stumbling around like they are drunk. But no one has gotten stung.”
OK all you Texans, did you go see the Guinness World Record gingerbread house back in 2013?

Was it eaten?
Not to my knowledge but maybe by the birds and critters. Lol
Thank you Ned!
Looks like something out of Hansel and Gretel. The part about the drunken bees made me laugh. Definitely unexpected hilarity! This is so cool, Diane!
Thank you Ab!
wowza!
I know! I bet that was something to see and with such a wonderful reason why they built it.
I wonder how long it took to build? What an effort!
I would love to know too! Thank you Marie!
Wow!
Thank you Dorothy
This would bring a whole new meaning to the saying…”They ate me out of house and home.”
Merry Christmas Goddess!
😂 Good one JC! Merry Christmas!
Wow! Amazing!
Poor bees! – I thought humans were the only animals that overinduldge.
Haha I had a good chuckle about the bees too. I wonder if any animals tried to eat it, the birds for sure.
Wow! all those ingredients and 7200 eggs! That’s quite something. I laughed when they said the bees came and seemed drunk lol. Our local brewery had a gingerbread making contest on the weekend. We didn’t go but the couple who won built a gingerbread brewery with a little bar and stools. It was pretty cute.
Oh how cute that must have been, very original too!
How fun is that? That’s a nice way to raise donations and for a good cause. Interesting about the bees though – they had sugar highs!
I wonder how long it was up before they took it down. I’m also wondering if it brought critters.
I would think it might bring critters, unless the ginger taste was too strong.
Oh goodness that is huge! I’ve always been fascinated by gingerbread houses and years ago I posted about an amazing gingerbread village they had on display in Seattle WA: https://tierneycreates.com/2016/12/05/gingerbread-village-12216/
That would be so much fun to see. I love seeing how talented people are, you included!
What a post! What a gingerbread house! I’m glad you included the recipe–I’m going to get right on that. I never thought of measuring a gingerbread house with calories.😉 This was a great idea for a fund raiser.
I agree, what a wonderful fundraiser. Let me know when you buy all the ingredients and I will come and watch you make it, I might even help! Lol
It would have been a fun event to attend!
I agree! I wish I had more information like how many people it took to build, if the birds and critters tried to eat it and how long it took to take down and clean up.
Just proves again that everything is bigger and better in the USA 😁. I don’t think it’s a recipe I would try (well, not in those quantities anyway)!
Haha That was a lot of eggs and butter!
That’s impressive! I’ve never even built a regular-sized gingerbread house.
They are not easy to put together but so much fun decorating.
WOW! That is so amazing and funny!
I agree, wish I could have seen it.
Wow
I would have loved to see it.
Me too
