Did You Know – Freezing Food

Don’t freeze food in their original packaging from the grocery store. With the food prices soaring, why waste your food because of freezer burn.

If you want your meat, fish, or poultry to last as long as possible in the freezer, read what is the best way to freeze them below.

Those plastic wrapped trays contain excess air that draws moisture out of the frozen food and leads to freezer burn.

The next time you return from the grocery store, open up those packages and transfer your meats into heavy-duty freezer bags, removing as much air as possible.

The only exception to this rule is meat that has been vacuum packed during the manufacturing process. Anything already vacuum packed should be perfectly sealed, so they’re good to go straight into the freezer.

  1. I know this but am often too lazy to do this. My former mother-in-law used to carefully unwrap the plastic wrap, remove the Styrofoam tray and rewrap in the plastic wrap from the original package.

    • I used to separate large quantities of food when the kids were home. Now that they are gone we don’t buy as much. What does amaze me is when we buy a side of beef (picking it up this week) and they wrap the meat in freezer paper, it never gets freezer burn.

  2. A very good tip, Diane! I buy my meat in bulk and ration them right away from the store into new packages. Great tip about reducing the air to minimize freezer burn!

    • Thanks Ab! The air is what causes the freezer burn. We have a vacuum unit but if you don’t have one a straw in an almost sealed freezer bag works too, just put a straw in and suck the air out of the bag then seal quickly.

    • Definitely saves space, things stack so much better in addition to saving the meat from freezer burn. What’s crazy is we pick up a side of beef tomorrow and the freezer paper they wrap it in never allows the meat to get freezer burned. I don’t care how long it’s in there it’s good.
