Desert Botanical Garden – Phoenix Arizona
Here is the rest of our pictures from Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix Arizona. The temperature was 96 degrees at 4:00 pm in March, the only hot day in our two week vacation.
Did you know that the Saguaro Cactus take 50-100 years before the arms start to grow?
Cactus flowers in Arizona bloom from mid-February to mid-June.
Next Wednesday will be pictures from Arizona State Park.

Thank you Betty. When we pulled up to pay the ranger said there aren’t any desert flowers in bloom. I thought that was strange since we saw all the flowers at the botanical garden. It was still a fun stop, lots of cactus, and we talked to the rangers when we were finished. They are the ones that told us about the cactus taking that many years to grow arms.
I always like to talk to the rangers. It’s how I learn things.
That was the best part of seeing the state park Betty. They also had the metal grates over a section of the ground that keeps the cows from crossing into another section. I found that so strange since there wasn’t any cows. Lol The ranger said they had cows years ago and have just continued to maintain the land as it is.

I find them so fascinating Mary. You should have seen me when we were driving down the road and just like that there were cactus all along the side of the road. I had to look silly snapping pictures out the moving car. I had no idea that was just the start of the cactus as you could see. 🤣

I really do love that terrain, the landscape is not something I ever would have thought would be something I’d enjoyed. But spending so much time now in West TX, the northern parts of West TX … I found myself seeing the beauty in it. It can be rugged for sure but there really is so much life here. I know you were in Arizona but it’s very much like what I see, minis the oils rigs. There is a lot much color amongst the shades of brown. Thanks for sharing the photos! I loved it!
You’re welcome! I couldn’t believe how long it took to drive from San Antonio north through the entire state, Texas is huge!
Oh yeah! I have tried to explain that to one of my sisters that lives in Colorado. It literally bigger in Texas!
Great photos. I used to visit the arboretum around Christmas time as they had blooming Christmas cactus all around and various musicians and music groups stationed in various locations, along with hot apple cider. I hope it was cool enough when you went there. While living in that area I always did my walks at 4 or 5 am, and my shopping in the evening.
Thank you Katelon! I would be there every season if it was closer, a beautiful place! That was the only hot day we had during our entire trip.

The desert flowers are the reason I wanted to go when we did. Unfortunately we missed that but I didn’t care after seeing the Botanical Garden!

Such beautiful photos of flowers that thrive in the dry deserts, Diane. Cactus have their own beauty, despite not being to really enjoy their touch, and I love that you both got to enjoy this experience!

The cactuses are amazing and their flowers are beautiful! Terry looks so small next to the tall cacti. I did not know it took that long for the arms to grow! I recognized some of the cacti as my mom used to have mini ones in her cacti gardens on the windowsill. I remember she did have a barrel-shaped cactus with a purple flower once … that was a first time it happened. We used to have a couple of Yucca plants which flowers bloomed once every Summer. Thank you for showing us these beautiful cacti Diane!
You’re welcome Linda! Terry just dug up our Yucca that were growing in front of the house. You can not get rid of them as he has dug them up for three years now. The roots must go to China and back.
Ha ha – I don’t remember that part, but they aren’t there anymore. I know there was one, maybe two and they only bloomed for a short time.

We hated to leave! We could have spent a month in Arizona, glad we didn’t because they were hit with all that nasty weather after we got home.
This type of plants thrives in hot desert conditions (it might not be so comfortable for us humans, but the plants love it!) Your photos are beautiful and there are so many plants and flowers that I recognise – not necessarily by name, but by appearance 😉.
I wish we lived closer to see what flowers bloom each month they are open. Do you have cactus? That palm tree in your most recent post was huge.
Oh yes, we have many different types of cacti. A few years ago, during a drought period, people started planting cacti in their gardens and now you see it in almost every garden. However, it remains the most beautiful for me to see them in their natural habitat (like in the desert).
And yes, palm trees are also a common sight – especially here in Cape Town. I’m always amazed to see how big and lush some of these trees are!

Love it! One year that we went out to Congress and Stanton AZ the dessert was green and the huge cactus had crows of flowers it was so gorgeous and this would have been in Nov.-Jan. time period when it was far from 90 🙂
