St. Louis Missouri Gateway Arch

My husband and I took a 13 day trip out west, we drove 4,658 miles. I will post pictures on Wednesdays as there are too many to post all at once. I will get back to my Wednesday food posts when I’m done sharing the trip. I have wanted to see the Gateway Arch for decades, it sure was gigantic and very impressive!

I couldn’t get a picture of the entire Gateway Arch up close but looking up at it was unbelievable.

These are the windows at the very top of the Gateway Arch where you look out of once you take the tram up. We didn’t take the tram up because my husband is claustrophobic. I was going to do it by myself but there was a school bus full of young kids lined up and I didn’t want my husband to have to wait for me.

My husband visited here before we even met so this attraction was for my bucket list.

This church was in front of the Gateway Arch.

Standing at the Gateway Arch and looking back toward town.

The schedule was every 10 minutes but I believe there are only five seats in each tram.

I found this fascinating. Inside the building was a museum with so many displays.

This picture was taken on a bridge while we were driving. It was the only opportunity I had to take a picture of the entire Gateway Arch.

Next stop is Uranus! You won’t believe this one.

    • OMG I told my husband the same thing. I thought the waterfront was so gloom and doom. Where we live the waterfront everywhere is so pretty. However, I have no regrets because as you stated, it was a beautiful park and very well kept up.

  1. This is also on my bucket list. I’m on my for a family reunion. I’m like your husband, I will admire from the ground. Beautiful pictures.

    • I was going to go on the tram until the long line of school kids. This was our first stop on vacation and I didn’t want to take the time waiting in line. I was happy we went since my husband went there before we were married but he didn’t mind. I was surprised you could actually touch it, it’s huge!

  2. Diane, I was excited to see this post – as I am from St. Louis. I grew up in south St. Louis and often visited downtown. Your pictures are great, and I am glad you got to take a big trip! You have published so many recipes. It will be nice to see your pictures from this trip!

  3. Oh, you have travelled very far! What beautiful pictures of the Gateway Arch – it is definitely impressive! Uranus? Are we taking the spaceship Diane 😁. I’m looking forward to this series!

    • Thank you! There were signs everywhere and we just had to see what it was. With my constant pain I have to stop at least every 2 hours so we made our route to see everything we could no matter how silly. It’s been 10 years since vacation to Alaska and this was worth the wait.

    • Yes but we made frequent stops. We won’t be that way again because our next trip will be out west (from Ohio) but in the middle states. Then the northwest states will be another trip.

  4. I have lived in the shadow of the Arch all of my life and I still get a little thrill every time I see it.

  5. I’m so happy you got to check an item off your bucket list. The arch looks so impressive! I didn’t realize that you could ride a tram to go up and view the city from up there. How very cool!

I’m glad you got to enjoy your long roadtrip together and look forward to seeing more of your photos!

    • Thank you Ab, it was a well needed time away from home. We haven’t had a vacation for 10 years. We went to Alaska for our 25th anniversary and this was for our 35th anniversary. We went early as our anniversary is in November but I wanted to see the desert flowers. We are so glad we went and I can’t wait to share more pictures.

  6. That is very impressive how big the Gateway Arch is. I like the first photograph and the way that you shot it looking up – it makes it all the more impressive for its height. Wow – 630 feet tall. I enjoyed seeing the area around the Arch too. I’ll look forward to next Wednesday’s installment of your trip. 🙂

  7. It sounds like a wonderful trip, Diane. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your pictures. My husband and I visited the Gateway Arch many years ago and did go up in it. I don’t remember it being too busy, but it was summer, so not school kids. It was amazing to see the view, but the windows were small. Funny, my husband developed claustrophobia as he got older, so I’m glad we went when we did.

    • I waited 66 years to see the arch Carla. I was happy my husband didn’t mind going back, just for me, since he already had been there. The kids were still in school and if not for their timing, I would have taken the tram up. I went and stood next to the arch, I touched it which I was shocked you were allowed to do. Such a good time!

  8. Thanks for doing this series! I have never been to St. Louis so this was a nice overview of the arch. I am looking forward to your next great adventure.

    • Hahaha These two places are just the start. We drove from Ohio to see the arch then west toward the Grand Canyon, a bunch of stops further south then to San Antonia and home. We (my husband) even drove straight home from San Antonia, Texas, 24 hours. We planned on being gone 14 days but we figured we would save a night at a hotel. We didn’t make a reservation at every place we stayed until the day before because we weren’t sure how far we would go every day, retirement is amazing!

  9. When I was in middle school we visited the arch. My cousin and I went to the top of it. We sat in a very small car/elevator to get us to the top.
So glad you got to see it!

    • I don’t know how they get 5 people in the tram! As small as it is I wonder what happens if it malfunctions and stops midway through. I really enjoyed seeing it.
