Did You Know – Free Colander
Do you get your colander out every time you rinse your produce? I don’t, instead, I rinse them in the plastic bag with small vent holes that the grapes come in or the plastic container with small holes that blueberries come in, for example. Then I simply throw the bag or container away.
After a good spraying of cold water I shake them slightly and place them in a bowl lined with paper towel to dry. Dishes are not my favorite thing to do and this way I don’t have to wash the colander.

Thanks for sharing. Going to let my wife know this. She likes to place soft skinned fruit in a vinegar wash before eating them. The clam the grapes or blueberries come in can be submerged in a sink of vinegar and water. This soak washes away dirt, bacteria, any pesticide residue, and the residue of the other 6-7 pair of hands
that touched your fruit before you bought it (harvesting, factory handling etc.)
I used to do that and even did a post on it. I have no idea why I stopped, it really does work!

I always rinse my fruit in the container they come in, just easier and yes, no dishes.
I guess I thought everyone did this but when I rinsed my grapes yesterday I thought it may be something people just don’t think about.
I don’t think everyone does, but it is something I’ve always done.
Hmm – be careful of the black widow spiders that were found twice in grapes a few years ago … this was in Krogers bags of grapes only though and the lady had opened the bag and the spider was inside it (very much alive).
Ewwwwwwww! Sometimes I wonder if their story is real. That would definitely freak me out and I remember that story now that you brought it up.
I saw the video of the spider – there were two incidents fairly close together. With the one lady, she had the grapes on the counter and the spider crawled out. I was chattin’ it up with a woman who worked in the produce department at Meijer once and she had on workman’s gloves to put out the bananas. I was getting bananas and, as I always do, I pick the bunch up with a plastic bag and check for banana spiders. She said “good idea, that’s why I wear gloves, as I reached in a box to start unloading the bananas and a banana spider crawled out.” She was not bitten – wow!
That’s horrible, I have never checked. I can see how they can stowaway though!
I always held the bananas up with a produce bag and wiggled each one – I’d probably faint dead away if one crawled out of the bananas. I always separate them when I get home, but still.
I don’t like Shredded Wheat but once I was at the grocery store and they had them on sale. I thought “I’ve not had these in a while – maybe have something different for a change.” (Although to me I thought they always tasted bland and like eating hay.) My mom had them occasionally. So there’s three biscuits in each sealed paper wrapper. I opened the brown wrapper and set it on the counter while I got a bowl and a Ziplock bag to put the third one in – I knew I was only eating two. In that short time, a parade of bugs came walking out of the Shredded Wheat wrapper and marched along the counter-top. Now I deal with baby ants in the Spring, but bugs in the Shredded Wheat was not acceptable! I ran and got a small garbage bag and put everything into it and took it outside into the backyard. You don’t have to wonder if I ever bought Shredded Wheat again!
That is nasty!!! I never liked the plain shredded wheats but I love to eat the frosted mini ones right out of the box.
I like the Frosted Mini-Wheats too Diane. I’ve not had them in awhile, in fact probably not since the Shredded Wheat Debacle. It was horrifying. Now I look every time I open a box of oatmeal or noodles. Nothing was as bad as opening the can of creamed corn, taking a few spoonfuls of it cold before heating it up and then seeing the big dead fly in the corn. I’m still here, so it didn’t kill me, but Del Monte’s attitude was rude and uncaring and they sent me a voucher for three cans of vegetables … they said “a human never puts the corn into the can.” Great. I wrote about it as I was horrified.
Well that wasn’t the best answer! Maybe a picture on the internet would have landed you better results.
I did take a picture and sent it to them – it was a huge fly. They did not seem all that concerned about it which kind of shocked me.
Well that says it all, last time I would have bought their food products.
I have never bought the canned cream corn anymore. I buy Meijer canned veggies in the larger cans, but sometimes in the Fall when I’m stocking up, Meijer has good deals (like 11 for $10.00 of DelMonte), so I just get the brand name instead).

That is so gross Linda, I find it funny you say you will never eat their vegetables again yet they send you coupons for more. I guess a little protein doesn’t hurt us right? 🤢
Yes and the person I dealt with (Linda) seemed to me that she though it was a funny situation – it was gross and it was large as you can see. It was not a regular fly either as it had huge wings that were stretched out. Ugh. I have never had creamed corn again. My mom used to buy those Bob Evans breakfast sausages and cook them in creamed corn and pour it over mashed potatoes sometimes.
I thought about this when I made taco salad the other day. I opened the new Ortega taco sauce jar which was sealed, however, when I took the plastic wrap off the top and opened the bottle, there was black mold all over the threads and inside the lid. They must have got the sauce on there and it turned to mold! I’m not eating it even though it looked and smelled ok. Terry said he will and he cleaned it off with a wet paper towel. Yuck!
I’d be leery too Diane. I like applesauce and used to buy the big jars of applesauce for years, either Motts or Meijers, whatever was on sale. But then it was getting so, I couldn’t open the lid – it was hard to open and a few times once I got it open, it was black on the inner lid. I started buying the individual ones after that and like that better as it’s not ice cold so sometimes I spoon it into oatmeal.
I love applesauce in cottage cheese too.
I like that too Diane and I also usually buy vanilla Greek yogurt and put it in there sometimes too.
I do this often – if I don’t have to wash an extra bowl, I’m quite happy!
