Did You Know – Pork & Beans

We call them baked beans and my grandma used to bring them to every family get together. It was the first thing I ate because I loved to eat the bacon as a child and now too. My favorite way to eat these is cold.
Canned versions of this classic American side dish can still be found on grocery store shelves, but it was once popular on the breakfast table, served alongside johnnycakes, a type of fried cornmeal pancake.
In the 1886 cookbook Practical Housekeeping: A Careful Compilation of Tried and Approved Recipes, author Estelle Woods Wilcox recommends adding a few tablespoons of molasses and salt pork to a pot of beans and baking it for six hours or longer.
Noting, “This is the Yankee dish for Sunday breakfast,” the author recommends the pork and beans be baked the day before, left in the oven all night, and browned in the morning, though they could also be eaten cold.

Thank you Lamittan!
Interesting history Diane
Thank you June!
I love pork and beans too, Diane (and I like them cold). With bacon? Yes! My great aunt made “Settler Beans” with all different types of beans. I still love baked beans! God bless you!
I’m not crazy about beans except kidney beans. I have to have them in baked beans hot the first day and then cold after that. Don’t they taste completely different from hot to cold? Cold is definitely my favorite too Karla! Thank you for stopping by and God Bless!
It’s my blessing! Happy Holy Week! 🙏🏻❤️
You too!
I love pork and beans but have never made them myself, I guess I should give it a whirl !
Yes you should make them for a picnic. That is the only time I make them because my husband doesn’t like beans. He actually makes his chili and mine (with beans) in two separate saucepans.
I like pork and beans, but don’t think I could eat them for breakfast.
I love them warm for supper and cold after that. I think I could eat them for breakfast cold if I ate breakfast. Lol
Canned pork and beans bring back so many happy memories of childhood. I ate them from a can too and loved the porky bits. Reminds me so much of my dad.
How funny it reminds you of your dad, for me it’s my grandma. There is a lot of tooting after eating these. 🤣
Yes, nothing like baked beans and stick those smokey links in them or kielbasa for a little zest. Now I want some!
I never tried baked beans with sausage or kielbasa, I always use bacon.
And I’ve never had baked beans with bacon (except that small piece that is in the can when you open it). 🙂
That’s funny, I always scooped up that one chunk they put in the can. Lol
Ha ha – always on the top of the beans/juice.
They are yummy! I always eat way too many. 😂
Haha
Pork and beans was a very common (sometimes too common!) dish here in New England. However, I was asked to bake beans (this is what I call them) for our town’s senior luncheon today. Amazing how few people bake beans and even fewer from scratch! I bake pork and beans about once a month for 9 months out of the year.
I’m curious what your baked beans are like. When I make them I add a little ketchup, brown sugar and bacon on top. It is one of our staple picnic food dishes.
Straight from the can just doesn’t do it. Bacon and sauces (catsup, molasses, etc) are a must. I also add onion and sometimes bell pepper sautéed in bacon grease. Yum!
I am just like you except no bell pepper.
