Homemade Baking Powder
Are you out of Baking Powder or has your Baking Powder expired? Yes it does expire and yes you can make your own! Below is the recipe to make your own.
First I will explain how to see if your Baking Powder is still OK to use. There is nothing worse than when you put all that effort into a fabulous recipe only to find out the Baking Powder is expired. Even though the date says expired you can do this simple test to see for sure. Take 1 tsp of the Baking Powder and add it to some hot water. If it bubbles a lot, it is ok to use. If it barely bubbles or doesn’t bubble at all, throw it out.
It is so simple to make your own Baking Powder if you have these two ingredients.
Measure 1 part baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) & 2 parts cream of tartar.
1/4 tsp of baking soda & 1/2 tsp cream of tartar = 1 tsp of Baking Powder.
***************************************************************************
If you want to make a larger quantity than just what you need to use, and you want to store some for another day, add 1 part cornstarch to help absorb the moisture.
1/4 tsp of baking soda, 1/2 tsp cream of tartar & 1/4 tsp cornstarch = 1 tsp Baking Powder.
Store Homemade Baking Powder in a cool, dark place and in an air tight container.

You are so welcome Jaya!
hello. So excited to see this post as I want everything homemade, that I know what the ingredients are in everything. Wrote this down and testing my baking powder now. Wonder if I can save the can and make a can of baking powder?
I store mine in an old baking powder can. It needs to be in an air tight container an the can is perfect! Plus it has that edge to scrape the measuring spoon on.
Yes. I am now making my own Baking Powder. Thank you so much for sharing.
