Eighth Kitchen Remodel Update

Things are moving along with our kitchen remodel but much slower now. My contractor has been on another job that he already had scheduled. Due to our kitchen cabinet replacements taking an additional 5 weeks, it is taking longer than expected to finish.
He was able to come all weekend and he made progress on the tedious molding work. The man is a perfectionist and he makes sure everything is installed perfectly, I love that! The paper floor covering was removed exposing the new floor.
Below is a before picture of the old molding on the kitchen window.

Here is the new frame he built and installed in white, I love it!

Look below at the top of the pantry cabinet, this is before.

Now look below at the top with the fancy molding installed. This is actually two large pantry’s side by side but with the molding it looks like one. Every upper cabinet looks like the picture below and it is so pretty!

We also had all of the brown molding and doors replaced with white ones. Below is the windows I look out daily with the old brown molding.

This is the white molding, he replaced all of the chair rail and baseboard too.

I am beyond excited with the change the white molding has made. I can’t wait to do the bedrooms too. It has completely updated this house, I couldn’t be happier!
Well, that’s it for now. There are three big changes to make yet. The ceiling needs a texture where he tore out the light and cabinets then it needs painted. A fancy molding at the bottom of the upper cabinets needs to be installed. The biggest change is the new backsplash, I can’t wait to see what that looks like.
So far I have learned you have to be patient with the chaos, expect delays and expect to pay more than your original budget. I would have been fine with my original budget but then at the last minute I added all new flooring, doors and molding in the living room and hall too. I have no regrets as it was the best decision I could have made.

The transformation is impressive!👍🌷
Thank you it’s like a new house!
🤝🙏🌷
Thank you so much.
It’s looking fabulous Diane
Thank you Sheree, light at the end of the tunnel!
Absolutely
Some wonderful Reno ideas there! Love the new kitchen window
Thank you Terese! I visited your site but I wasn’t able to comment???
That’s brilliant, your kitchen is really taking shape now. It looks great, really like your new windows and flooring as well.
Thank you Paul! It is so strange to go from a country style home to a modern home but we love it.
It is good to have a perfectionist – as we did – he had been a boat builder. Your colour schemes are very similar to ours.
I agree, I go nuts when things aren’t even such as the lights over the island. This guy had a laser level on everything! Great minds think a like. Lol
Diane, this is absolutely beautiful. The moldings add a finished look to an already stunning kitchen. It’s wonderful to fall in love with your home again. Enjoy!
Thank you Betty! The funny thing is I never was in love with the house, it was the land. We have lived here over 30 years and we started with the yard and outside of the house, love it now. We remodeled the dining room last year, love it now. Finally the kitchen, I am ecstatic!!!!! Now that we did all this I can’t wait to keep remodeling the rest. So really, this is the first time I have fallen in love with our home. It’s about time isn’t it Betty! 🥰
This is wonderful! Many things can be changed about a house, but its location and surroundings are pretty much set. I am glad you are so happy and excited!
Thank you so much for your kind words Betty! 💕
Looking great!!
Thank you GP!
Wow – this would be featured in a magazine
Thank you so much Beth!
It’s starting to look like a dream kitchen now Diane! I really like the new look of the windows. You know … if there are no regrets, then it’s a job well done!
Thank you Corna. The grandkids have stayed for a day each and they are having so much fun with the cabinets, go figure, I actually buy them toys. 🤣 I am really excited for Friday because the contractor is coming to put in the backsplash. Woo hoo!
Beautiful touches. The windows are picture frames for the landscape outside.
Thank you Dorothy and yes the windows are my savior on my bad days physically. I haven’t been able to do much outside this year and my wonderful husband is doing what he can to keep things up. When I get a good day now I have to keep unboxing things. Now I am replacing outlets as they were all beige, so I am wiring in the new white plugs and faceplates. I can only do two a day but it’s getting there. I just want to do anything to make this remodel process speed up and this definitely helps a little.
I’m so sorry you’ve not been well physically, and with all you’ve been doing dealing with the remodel!
Thank you Dorothy, I love this remodel but wish everything was done.
Gorgeous !! I love your lights too. Renovations can be stressful and take so long but you will be glad when it’s finished completely. My husband is renovating our entire basement, he has everything ripped out, carpets, drywall etc and I just keep thinking what it will look like in a couple of months and try not to see all the chaos lol
Thank you and congratulations on starting your basement remodel, so exciting! So he gutted the whole basement Susan, wow! You are lucky your hubby can do the work, thousands saved!!! Post pictures please, I would love to see what he does. We are done with most of the chaos but it’s the moving things from here to there then cleaning furniture, floors and counters over and over again that I have had enough of. Hopefully you can close the basement door and not see it when it seems to get overwhelming. Due to the bad cabinets they sent us, it extended the chaos an additional 5 weeks. I think we would have been fine otherwise.
Yes he’s been busy ! It’s a lot of work. I feel bad about your cabinets, I know that was a disheartening day for you. I wish we could snap our fingers and have renovations done overnight 😆
I guess we appreciate it more this way. Lol
It looks great! Enjoy!
Thank you Katelon, finally almost done!
What’s done is gorgeous💜
Thank you so much!
What did you choose for a backsplash? I have to choose one and I think my daughter and husband like the subway tile look going horizontal with white grout and a little bit of shine. And is your countertop granite? And if so, what were your thoughts on choosing it? Thanks:-)
My backsplash is octagon shaped marble. The contractor is suppose to start installing it Friday. Hopefully he finishes this weekend then I will post it Monday. I personally didn’t want the subway tile because they have been popular for so many years. I knew if I put them in they would go out of style soon (how my luck goes). After looking at a 70’s kitchen for so long I wanted to make sure things were updated and stay that way. I was watching a lot of remodeling shows on TV and they are still putting it in so it really isn’t outdated. My counter tops are granite. I went to the warehouse where all the places that sell countertops buys from. I went in wanting quartz and walked out with granite. Every slab of granite is so unique and that kind of beauty made from the earth just fascinated me. Granite is heat proof (although I am afraid to put anything hot on it) and the only thing you have to do is spray a light coat of sealer on it. I was told 15 years, 10 years and 2 years so take your pick. 🤣 You spray it on then wipe it off I think. The granite was one of the best decisions we made and I highly recommend it. Marble is porous and quartz and quartzite are pretty, however, they are man made and have a repeating pattern. My counters and island are long and the repeating pattern would have been noticeable. Feel free to ask me any questions. I designed this kitchen in a little over a year and so far love it all.
How beautiful, Diane! I love it!!
Thank you so much, everything has turned out so well so far.
Diane, I liked the brown trim, but I must admit that everything looks so fresh and updated now. Just gorgeous! When you listed the items you added to your “needs to be updated” list as the work progressed, I couldn’t help but reflect on my family’s reaction. Someone would have said “if you give a mouse a cookie…” referring to the children’s book. Yep, one thing led to another.
I never thought I would have anything but wood in the kitchen. I even planned on wood cabinets before I spent a year watching house renovations on TV. Our house is small and very dark. The gray cabinets helped lighten it up where the wood ones made it so dark. The same with the molding and 7 doors that are now white. After living here for over 30 years it was a nice change.
It looks fabulous so far Diane – I love that it is so light and airy looking, just like you like. It makes a difference from before. I like the molding treatment as well. I think it is too pretty now to cook and make a mess. 🙂
Haha with all the counter space it is so simple to clean up and cook. Surprisingly the gas range cleans easier than the electric range did. The deep sink and moveable faucet make clean up a breeze too. Although I haven’t cooked every day, I have definitely enjoyed cooking. Can you tell I planned ahead when designing? 🤣 Thank you Linda!
What is nice with all that counter space, you can put out all your favorite appliances and they will get used more. My mom’s big mixer is on my counter top taking up space … I know I won’t use it, so should just take it downstairs. And the crockpot is taking up valuable space too. My mom would often say “when we lived in Canada, I had lots of cupboard space and nothing to put in them – now I have no cupboard space and have to store pots and pans in the oven!”
It’s funny you say that about the appliances. I actually use one of the large pantry’s for all of the appliances now except our knives and my coffee pot, that stays on the counter! Lol I am hoping to have a couple of accent things for the counter like a fruit bowl and that’s it. A lot of people store their pots and pans in the oven. I think it’s a great idea. I would do that if I didn’t use the oven so much.
That’s right – you showed us the double pantry doors … well clutter-free is the way to go and now you know why my house looks like it does and I keep eying the glass stovetop to put this computer on. 🙂 It was a pain to take everything out when my mom baked. She had nowhere to put anything.
Now that you’re retired, you will figure it out. After all, you have all the time in the world now!
I love having all the time in the world now Diane and I have not worn a watch since my last day of work 03/29/24!
Haha I stopped wearing mine too. In fact, yesterday Terry asked me what time it was and I said “I don’t know and I don’t care.” I didn’t even get my phone out to check the time.
That’s funny. It is a heady feeling isn’t it?
Yes
Hi Diane
The kitchen updates are clean and fresh – and glad you were able to add in the extra updates – it makes sense to do it while the other stuff is getting done
Thank you Yvette! I have no regrets about anything I did thank goodness. There is more to do like painting, new modern lights in the living room and hall and a new foyer floor, I didn’t want the LVP flooring in there. Oh and I remodeled the dining room a year ago, however, I didn’t change the wood molding to white, I definitely will do that. I don’t have any loans so I need to replenish the funds before I do more cash remodeling.
How beautiful my friend! All the details are making it gorgeous!
Everything the contractor adds makes me love it more and more. I am so excited for tomorrow because he is starting the backsplash!!!! 🎉🥳👏
Your kitchen is magazine spread beautiful.
I think that is the nicest thing anyone has said, and I have had a lot of really nice comments! Thank you Bernadette, that really means a lot. 💕
Love what you’ve done. Borders are gorgeous.
Thank you for you kind words Suzanne!
Just lovely!
Thank you!
It’s really beautiful! I haven’t regretted all the white that we did in our remodel, getting rid of the very dark 70’s wood. Looks like a whole new house. You have made very nice decisions!
I know you understand the huge difference then! I have always loved wood everywhere but now that I see the white, it’s amazing! Thank you for your nice comment Patty. Do you still have your website. I have tried and tried to go to it and it won’t load. Is it still hesaidwhatks.com?
It looks amazing, Diane. The change in molding colour has modernize your home a lot. I can see why you’re so pleased!
Thank you Ab. The contractor messaged me today and wants to start the backsplash Friday!!!! 🎉👏🥳
🙌🙌🙌
It looks so clean and fresh. I love the brightness. I was wondering about the back splash. I look forward to seeing what you chose.
The contractor just finished installing it an hour ago but he still has to do the grout. I bought two different colors so he is going to take leftover tiles and grout them with both colors to see which one I like the best. I am very happy with the backsplash. Thank you Carla!
Can’t wait to see the final pictures, Diane.
I can’t wait either! Lol
It all looks fabulous, Diane! The white molding around the windows makes a big difference. You are going to enjoy that kitchen sooooo much!
Thank you Janet, I am already enjoying the kitchen but looking forward to the end!
Wow it is looking spectacular!
Thank you Tierney! The contractor put the backsplash tiles up a week ago then grouted Friday. He only works a few hours a week now so it seems like the remodel that never ends. Lol
Someday will you will be dancing in your finished kitchen 🙂
He didn’t come this week at all. 😩 My husband filled all the nail holes in the molding and I replaced all the outlets in the living room to save him time. All the molding was painted before being installed but they need painted again to cover up the wood putty and scuff marks from the installation. I may start that once my husband finishes the wood putty. He still has so much to do.
Absolutely gorgeous! It must be fun to get cook’n in that kitchen!
Thank you and what a difference from the old one. I will be happy when the contractor finishes the small projects he has left. I really enjoy cooking in this kitchen.
That’s great!
It’s gorgeous!
Thank you Debbie! I had to call the contractor because he has been working on another kitchen and ours still has quite a bit of little things that need finished. We began the remodel in May and we want it finished. I asked him to finish by the end of this month and he said it shouldn’t be a problem. Once he’s done I will post before and after pictures, you won’t believe what my 70’s kitchen looked like before the remodel.
