Did You Know – Yogurt

A bowl of creamy yogurt garnished with a small sprig of parsley, surrounded by fresh parsley leaves.

The precise origins of yogurt are unknown, but we do know that this fermented dairy product has been part of the human diet for many years.

According to some historical accounts, yogurt was discovered accidentally thousands of years ago by nomadic herdsmen. These nomads carried milk in pouches made of animal skins, which contained naturally occurring enzymes that caused the milk to ferment, inadvertently producing an edible food, yogurt, that had the benefit of lasting longer than milk.

Some of the first recorded accounts of yogurt β€” as well as its health benefits β€” are found in Indian Ayurvedic scripts from around 6000 BCE.

The word itself is believed to have come from the Turkish word yogurmak, which means to thicken, coagulate, or curdle.

  1. Well I adore yogurt Diane and have been eating it as long as I can remember – I had no idea it has been around for that long! I just discovered a new yogurt brand a few months ago. I have been buying Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt and it was on sale and there were none left, so I tried “Too Good” brand – yummy! Their Meyer lemon is made from “rescued lemons” and I like the coconut too.

      • I like Chobani – I’ve never tried the black cherry though. I will have to try it. I like all yogurt too, especially the drinkable ones, which I get as an occasional treat for myself when they are on sale.

      • They are delicious, but to me it is three big swigs and it is gone. I like the pina colada and mango best, but I can’t find the mango anymore – it must not be popular.

      • Just the drinkable kind was mango – I have never had mangos before so I tried it. This yogurt I’ve been buying also has lime which is very good. That was the first time to have lime yogurt – lime anything, although, I have had Key Lime pie before.

      • I love Key Lime Pie but nothing else lime. When my parents moved to Florida I went to visit and bought different kinds of fruit to try. Mangoes were one and I really thought they looked so good but not for me.

      • In the yogurt drink, you can’t taste them enough to know how they taste. I tasted kiwi fruit once, but can’t recall the taste of it either.

  2. A yogurt is part of the start of each day for me. Goes so well with oatmeal. I like mine plain and Greek so it’s less in fat and high in protein. T currently likes the lemon yogurt after enjoying vanilla for the longest time.
