My Pink Wisteria

With all of the spring flowers in our yard and their beautiful colors, the wisteria on my arbor has to be my favorite. I wish you could smell the sweetness of the gigantic flowers.
The arbor is 50 feet long and my husband and I built it in 1997. I planted tiny wisteria vines at each post and trained them to climb the posts. Once they reached the top I regularly prune shoots growing below the top of the arbor.
If you think you would love to have this in your yard, think hard about it. The hours upon hours I spend maintaining these gorgeous flowers is not for everyone. Wisteria is a vine and they don’t ever stop growing, in every direction.
I have no regrets planting my wisteria because I have had the time over the years to maintain them. When the flowers open it is an amazing view and scent that makes the work worth every minute I spend on them.

Magnificent
Thank you Derrick, a labor of love!
The scent must be beautifully overpowering!! All your hard work paying off.
Thank you so much!
You’re welcome!
Well worth all the time and effort, Diane… your wisteria look magnificent!
It really is worth it, thank you so much!
Nice post 🌹beautiful pictures 🌹
Thank you!
That is truly glorious Diane
Thank you so much Sheree
My pleasure
And what a lovely view it provides. I can imagine how sweet a smell you have while sitting out there. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Katelon! When we built the arbor I never dreamed it would look this beautiful so we put it on the west end of the property where I can’t see it from the house unless I walk over there. Now I wish it was closer.
Sadly, those vines don’t grow in my area. The climate isn’t right for them. I’ve never smelled one, but the images of them are loved. The best we can do around here is lilac. Mine are making a feeble attempt to bloom now. Maybe by the end of next week, if the weather cooperates. Your hard work was worth it.
I have lilacs that have been here for over 30 years and they don’t flower like they used to. We cut them down to the ground but couldn’t get the root system out. They are back to being 7 feet tall again but still not flowering like it used to. I hope you get some gorgeous and great smelling flowers.
I will post pictures. With the rain and sun we’re expected to get along with heat (I hope) they should look great by the weekend.
Beautiful!
Thank you so much!
Just gorgeous. What a testimony of love. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your nice comment and my pleasure to share. Living in the country and behind our large pole barn it can’t really be seen from the road. So I take pictures and share them so others can enjoy them too.
Beautiful! Sometimes a task, like maintaining your wisteria, can be meditative or therapeutic in a way. It can be good for your soul in a quiet, repetitive way. And I’m sure looking at such a beauty is good for your soul, too!
I love the way you look at life Betty. Everything I do in our yard is good for the soul. My favorite is sitting in the cabana at sunset and listening to the birds tweet in their nests. We have had so much wildlife this year, deer, fox, rabbit, woodchuck, birds and the neighbors chicken! 🤣
That sounds very relaxing!
So gorgeous! Your hard work certainly paid off. If we could grow wisteria in Duluth MN, I certainly would try.
Thank you so much! It is a lot of work but definitely worth it.
It’s beautiful! What I’ve always dreamed of.
My experience with wisteria was not good; it was planted too close to the house and continues to try to eat it! It’s quite stubborn.
I trained a pink and blue wisteria into two trees near our house. They looked so cool as nobody had anything like it around our area. When they started growing bigger we had to stake them to keep them upright. Once they got about 10 feet tall and with all the wind we have here, they kept blowing over. We used metal poles, chains and the wind still blew the vines over. We got tired trying to get them back upright and took them out. That was probably 10 years ago and they still pop up in the grass. Lol
Yes, they are never gone! Ours crept across the lawn and grew up our tall evergreen hedge, and bloomed profusely at the top!
Hahaha I understand that! The ones at our arbor try to climb our cherry tree and we are constantly cutting the vines so they can’t. I’m afraid they will choke off the cherry tree and kill it.
Oh, they will!
They are beautiful, Diane! And they apparently love your yard and the personal care that you provide to them! 🙂
Thank you! What’s funny Anita is I don’t water them or fertilize them. The only thing I do is prune and prune and prune them! Lol
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Just beautiful! A great example of hard work bearing fruit again and again.
Thank you so much for your kind words Ab! 🥰
They are beautiful, but I wouldn’t want the work.
It was OK before my medical issues and age. It takes me an hour at a time to keep it pruned.
I get that feeling, Diane. They are beautiful though.
Wow, that’s beautiful Diane. But I also know that most things in the garden that look like a work of art involves hard work. I can understand why you must feel quite proud of your Wisteria.
It is a lot of work Corna, thank you my friend!
Absolutely beautiful Diane ! I can almost smell them 🙂
Thank you!
Very beautiful Diane – what a wonderful sight to look out onto every Spring.
P.S. – Good thing you two went to the Tulip Festival last year. It s going on now, until Mother’s Day, but people are complaining as many, if not most, of the tulips bloomed two weeks ago in our “hot spell” and were bloomless this weekend for the record crowd.
Wow everything seems to be two weeks early! What a disappointment that would have been driving all that way and they weren’t at their peek. I feel bad for the people that went. Thank you
Yes. attendees thought they should have advised people in advance on their website or FB site – they still have their Tulip Parade, but that’s about it for this year.
I came across a wisteria on a walk this spring. It was only maybe a tenth of your display. On the basis of that, I can only imagine the wonderful fragrance you have in your yard. They are beautiful.
They do smell so good, thank you Linda. 🥰
GORGEOUS!!
Thank you Nancy!
It is a beautiful labor of love and admired I’m sure by many!
Actually nobody can see it unless they come into my backyard. Even though the arbor is 50’ long it is hidden in my backyard. That is why I enjoy sharing the pictures. Thank you
Wow, it’s lovely! Pink is my fave color. I know what you mean about gardening taking time ~ I have a front and back garden and it takes more time than most people realize when they visit and see it. But well worth it!
It sure does Christy, I bet your gardens are lovely!
Love it! 🙂
Thank you!
Oh those are so beautiful and I love how their trunks twist – they are art!
Thank you it has been many, many hours of training the trunks.
This is so gorgeous, Diane! Does Wisteria bloom all summer?
Thank you Patty and no they don’t unfortunately. The individual petals open at the top of the large flower and work their way down. Once the bottom petals open the top are already dying off. Then if we get rain or a strong wind they disappear fast. This time I had about 5 days of really good blooming. It’s a lot of work for months just to enjoy those flowers for a few days, but the vines look really nice over the arbor too.
