Did You Know – Peeling Ginger

I used to peel ginger with a vegetable peeler. I could never get into the crevices of the ginger and I wasted a lot of it.

Now I use a baby spoon but any small spoon should work. I peeled this ginger in no time at all, with very little effort and no waste by scraping the edge of the spoon over the ginger skin.

Thanks for sharing this. Great information. Yes using a vegetable peeler removes (though small amount) usable ginger. It’s amazing how the spoon only removes the skin of peel.
You’re welcome!
That’s what I do too, Diane
The person that thought of this is a genius!
😎
A great tip
Thanks Derrick
brilliant solution
Thank you Beth but I saw it on line a long time ago. The person that figured this out is the brilliant one.
Oh yes, we do it that way too. We always used a small knife but then got the tip from a friend to use a spoon. And apart from the fact that the spoon works well, there is also less chance that I can cut my finger 😉.
Yes and it would be so easy to cut your finger with all those crevices in the ginger.
I learned this ginger hack this year as well and it’s a really great hack!
I tried it about a year ago but I used a regular table setting spoon and it didn’t work well. Maybe it had too smooth of an edge. The baby spoon was amazing!
Thanks for a great tip, Diane💜
You’re so welcome Jonetta 🥰
Thanks for this brilliant tip – we use a lot of ginger in the Asian inspired dishes we make!
You’re welcome Tierney🥰
Great tip Diane
Thank you
I LOVE this. I have the perfect spoon! 🙂
It was so easy Linda. Thank you
👍
Thanks!
I’m going to give this a try – thanks Diane!
If it isn’t very easy, try a different spoon. For me my thin small baby spoon worked so well Mary.
I’ve never seen ginger like that … just as a gingersnap. Yes, you are giggling over that comment. I haven’t had a gingersnap in years, since I got a crown as they are so hard. My mom used to break up a bunch, heat them up and put them into warm peaches with whipped cream on top.
Well you know me! I seriously giggled then read your comment! 🤣 I haven’t had ginger snaps since I was a child. What a great way to eat them!
That was a first for me the non-cook amongst your blogging buddies. 🙂 I liked the “snap” of those ginger snaps. Yes, try that out on a cold Winter’s day – easier on the teeth too.
I’m not a big ginger fan, but I will remember this post if I ever have to peel ginger. 🙂
I usually just use ground ginger but every now and then I have my husband get a small piece at the store. It definitely tastes better than ground.
I used to eat at a Chinese restaurant years ago that had a delicious dish with ginger. There were pieces of ginger in the dish which I didn’t like. He would make the dish without so much ginger and remove the pieces for me. It was so much better.
Oh I wouldn’t like the chunks either, how nice he removed them for you.
Id never thought of using a spoon to peel ginger!
I read about it years ago and the spoon I used back then didn’t do a good job. Then I tried it with a baby spoon and it was perfect!
Nice tip!
Thank you Katherine.
We will have to try this, we use a lot of ginger and you’re right, a peeler just doesn’t work very well! Thanks Diane!
You’re welcome, you will want to kick yourself when you see how easy it is. If it doesn’t peel easily, try a different spoon.
Ok thank you !
