Amish Scalloped Potatoes With Cheese

The best Scalloped Potatoes I have ever tasted! Made with potatoes, onions and a seasoned homemade cheese sauce then baked in the oven. This was even delicious warmed up the next day.

Spray a 3 quart casserole dish with cooking oil.

In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Whisk in the flour, salt and pepper until smooth.

Slowly whisk in the hot milk so no lumps form, stirring constantly until thickened.

Add the cheese and stir until melted and combined. Remove from the heat.

Layer the sliced potatoes and onions in the prepared casserole dish, repeating until used up.

Pour the cheese sauce over the top.

Cover and bake in a preheated 350º oven for 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and gently toss making sure the sauce covers all of the potatoes. Put back into the oven, covered, for an additional 20-30 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked through.

Let sit without a lid for 5 minutes then serve.

  1. Potatoes are one of the land of foods special gifts. But when you get hold of them…watch out! You brought them to a new, higher level!

  2. I would not have thought to stir when almost done and then finish cooking. It makes sense, but I always think of casseroles as being something that comes out of the oven the same as it went in. Great idea!

    • I like to do this with potato dishes. I find that with potatoes they don’t cook evenly. Sometimes they are mushy from overcooking while others may not be cooked enough. Tossing gently makes them perfect every time. Thank you Linda!

  3. I haven’t had scalloped potatoes in forever … my mom made them with slices of kielbasa or smoked sausage. Now I am salivating for something tasty.
