Did You Know – Dates

Did you know that there is a difference in nutrition between Dried Dates and Fresh Dates?
Dried Dates have a better source of calcium and iron. Dates can be dried by setting them in the sun, in a warm oven or in a dehydrator. Dried Dates can be stored for approximately 24 months.
Fresh Dates have a better source of vitamin C. The reason why is because vitamin C is not stable, it can be destroyed by the storage and the heat from drying dates. Fresh Dates will go moldy in approximately 2 weeks.

I love fresh dates just like they are, however, see my favorite cooked dates recipe at https://indianeskitchen.com/2023/01/21/bacon-wrapped-cream-cheese-filled-dates/

They sound delicious, Diane. I’ll try the recipe when I need to bring a dish. Thanks!
That is actually why I made them for the first time. I went to my daughter in laws baby shower and her sister made them, I was hooked! Thank you Ermine!
I’ve only come to eat dates in the last few years and I love them! interesting about the difference
They are a good excuse to eat a sweet! Thank you Beth!
I use dates a lot as an alternative to sugar
I was reading about that Sheree. I saw where it was made into a syrup like consistency and used in coffee, on things like pancakes etc. I think that would be delicious.
Absolutely
Last time I had fresh dates was in Iran when serving as officer in Irani war
I didn’t know you served in Iran. What a nice snack for a sweet craving Kevin!
Who knew! I need more calcium so dried dates it is. 😆😊
I love to grab a couple for a snack or sweet craving.
Bacon wrapped dares are great I know. Years ago I had a aunt who made me a Christmas gift every year of a big loaf of date nut bread. Warm that up and smear on butter or cream cheese and just enjoy it. Man I miss that. I miss her even more.
Oh my that sounds delicious!!!!
Dried all the way. Also, dried Turkish figs.
I never had Turkish figs! We only get the Medjool at our grocery store.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen fresh dates….only dried ones.
Same here Katelon.
I didn’t know these facts about dates, but I do love them.
Me too Kellye! We went to my son’s house for a fish fry yesterday and my sons wife made dates with peanut butter and chocolate. After we left she tried dates with Nutella and coconut. I wasn’t crazy about them and will stick to bacon and cream cheese. She’s pregnant and due in about 4 weeks. She read dates help the cervix ripen so she is chowing down! 🤣
I might have to try the Nutella and coconut version, but I like anything with bacon and cream cheese!
She said they were good. The one she gave me with peanut butter had way too much peanut butter on it, I couldn’t even taste the date.
I love dried dates, but do you know how much sugar is in one!
I know some how the liquid is extracted and used as a syrup and used for things like coffee, topping for ice cream etc. I’m guessing it is like the maple syrup people put on pancakes so I’m sure it is a lot of sugar, probably why I love them. 🤣
This recipe is positively decadent. Wish I could taste a fresh date. I have never seen one in any market.
Me too Bernadette! Thank you
I don’t know that I have ever seen or tasted a fresh date. Anyway, I love the dates that I buy in the store. I take it that they are the dried ones.
Yes, that’s all I have ever bought too Stephen. The dried dates have a dull skin and I believe the fresh dates have a wet looking skin.
Interesting information about dates, Diane, and your bacon wrapped dates look delicious!
Thank you Linda, they are so good. Have a great weekend!
Hi! Dates always remind me of a story. One year when we were in Borrego Springs in the desert of southern California on vacation, we always get a date shake or two at this small, family run cafe. Anyway, this particular year I was sure the cafe closed at 4:30 so when B left to go motorcycling in the desert, I reminded him that if he wanted one last date shake before we left, to be back before 4:30. He arrived back at 4:15. Unfortunately, I had read the sign wrong and the place closed at 4:00. B has yet to forgive me for this error! Mind you, we had already had one date shake that year! B loves dates.
Hahaha How funny! I have never heard of a date shake, I would love it! Thank you for sharing your story Karla!
Love dates and most recipes made with them!
Thank yo Mary, I agree 100%!
We love fresh dates (and often find them here in our stores). In 2020 we ended a 4×4 trip on a date farm, Klein Pella (the largest date plantation in the Southern Hemisphere) and bought ourselves a box of fresh dates there … I think they were the most delicious dates I have ever eaten!
If you have time, you can read about the date farm here:

I wish I could taste them fresh! That was a beautiful trip and a long harvest time!
Okay didn’t know this. Very educating. Thanks for sharing! 🙏🏼💛
You’re very welcome!
<3
I have bought the dried dates, both whole and chopped up to put in oatmeal in the morning. I didn’t know about the differences in dried versus fresh dates. The Vitamin C in fresh dates surprises me Diane, but how clever you are with your bacon (which does not surprise me). 🙂
Clever is you putting dates in oatmeal. I put raisins in oatmeal and never thought about dates! Thank you
You’re welcome Diane- I put finely chopped hazelnuts in oatmeal too. I buy them like that at Meijer.
That one I will pass, I don’t like nuts. Lol
I shouldn’t eat nuts either – I am nutty enough. 🙂
🤣😂🤣
I know dates only from that beautiful photo at the end of the post – one of my favorites at a party – bacon wrapped dates!
Awe thank you!
Interesting info. Thanks. I LOVE dates but come to think of it I don’t think I’ve ever had a fresh one – only dried. Hmmmm….
I think all we have access to is dried dates, at least in my area. Thank you Linda!
I don’t think I have ever had a fresh date, Diane. I basically use the dried ones in baking.
Dried dates are about the only kind we see in the stores here, too, Carla.
I love dates💕
Me too, they are the perfect sweet snack!
