Did You Know – Bread Crumbs

Did you know that making your own bread crumbs is as simple as saving your leftover bread, even the heels?

Make your own bread crumbs for use as crunchy casserole toppings, in meatloaf or whatever you use breadcrumbs for.

Save your stale or leftover bread in a freezer bag and freeze. When you have enough, bake the slices in a 250-degree oven until dry and crumbly, then tear into sections and pulse in a food processor or blender. Baking time will depend on the thickness of the bread. Baking at this low temperature gently evaporates moisture while lightly browning and toasting the bread.

You can store dried breadcrumbs in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks in the cupboard or up to 4 months in the freezer.

  1. Well done. Especially for the American families over-buying, over-consuming. I’d likely drive folks crazy with my bread discipline. I bake a 1# loaf every Friday = a slice for breakfast every day + 1 extra for weekly whatever. That includes the (smaller) heels which get a peanut butter calorie bump when consumed. 🙂

    • Wow I wish I had the discipline to only eat one piece! You are right, we do over buy and consume. I’m all for the peanut butter especially on hot toast so it starts to melt, so good! Thank you❣️

  2. I’m way too disciplined about my bread. I bake 1# loaf every Friday which provides 1 breakfast slice each day + 1 extra for something. Not enough for reasonable quantity of crumbs, I fear. Though, I suppose I could save a few over weeks, eh?

  3. Good idea to “collect” them until you have enough. I usually end up drying out bread and cornbread in the oven at Thanksgiving so this would work great and avoid waste.

    • Thank you! I do the same for my broth. I freeze the ends of my veggies (or the veggies that are close to going bad) instead of throwing them in the compost. Once I have enough I boil them with the meat for a delicious broth.

  4. Yes! I just started freezing the bread heels (or “bread butts” as I call them) and once I save up enough of them, I bake them into a strata or bread pudding. 🍞 Thanks for sharing!
