  1. This certainly is an amazing recipe as I have never thought of using green tomatoes in such a wonderful way.I have tasted been tomatoes curry in a thick gravy with pieces of broken roasted papad in one of our famous restaurants. Thanks a lot for sharing.Take care.🙏😊🌹

  2. Looks so good. It wasn’t until just a few years ago that I got to taste my first Fried Green Tomato. So good! Prior to that, I always associated It with the movie starring Jessica Tandy. Love your recipe and great use of leftover tomatoes.

  3. Perfect timing on the post. I wanted to let you know that I tried your tip on picking tomatoes that were just beginning to blush and ripening them inside. It worked! But I took it a step further. We were leaving northern NM for a season and had to disconnect our drip watering system to our container tomatoes. So we picked everything on the plants. My husband intended to make a green salsa from the green tomatoes, almost as if they were tomatillos. We haven’t done anything with them except wash them and throw them in a bowl on the counter. They are ALL gradually starting to ripen. The former green ones are not as sweet as the ones with a blush and the skin is a little tough, but they are still better than the store’s gassed tomatoes.

    • Amen I can’t stand store bought tomatoes. We pay more for the tomatoes ripened on the vine which are so much better but still not as good as our garden tomatoes.

  4. Here in the Carolinas these are a staple. If you ever go to a party here and they don’t serve them…leave. Same goes for deviled eggs.

  5. OH GEEWHIZ!!! I like fried green tomatoes, but I like juicy, ripe, AWESOME, mouthwatering YUMMYLICIOUS, ripe red tomatoes better. 🙂 Every year, it never fails, someone asks me if “I” have had fried green tomatoes. I am 60 and they are usually much younger… They are usually a visitor or someone I haven’t known very long. It always seems as if they want me to pick a few green tomatoes in the middle of the summer. They are NUTS. I don’t pick green tomatoes until an “F” is in the forecast! Well, I am afraid that time is nearer than I want it to be. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I’ve never heard of this (well, I did thought about the movie when I saw the title of your post) … but never tasted tomatoes prepared this way! But from the comments, it seems I’m missing out big time! Time to go to the store to get some (green) tomatoes then … 🍅🍅

    • Yes you must try them at least once. Experiment with your own breading once you figure out if you like them. I’m sure you will come up with a wonderful breading and will cook them in your cast iron pan over the fire. 😉

      • Some people won’t share! When I make them at home I often broil or air fry to reduce the fat & calories.

I use an old Southern cookbook recipe, but a quick google took me to a Southern Living recipe that sounds like what I do with egg, flour, cornmeal, butter milk and seasoning. They even give a video on how to dredge and in what order.

      • Thank you Sarah I will Google and see what I can find. It’s funny because I think the cornmeal was the only thing I didn’t use. I think this person was just one of those people that if they can’t say something nice they should say nothing at all. Lol
