Easy 40 Minute Dinner Rolls Or Buns

If you have never made rolls using yeast, this is the perfect recipe to start with. You can use this recipe for hamburger buns or hotdog buns by changing the shape accordingly.

Add the yeast to a large bowl.

Warm the water to 110º-115º.

Add the water and dissolve the yeast.

Add the oil and the sugar, stir

and let stand for 5 minutes.

Add the egg and salt then stir.

Add enough flour to form a soft dough ball.

Sprinkle flour onto a clean surface.

Knead the dough for 3-5 minutes or until

smooth and elastic. (Do not let it rise)

Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces.

(I only show 6 of mine)

Roll each piece into a ball for rolls, slightly

flatten for hamburger buns or shape

into a hotdog bun.

Place 2” apart on a greased baking sheet.

Cover and put in a warm place for 10 minutes.

Bake in a preheated 425º oven for 8-12 minutes

or until golden brown. Remove from the baking

sheet and place on a cooling rack to cool.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. active dry yeast
  • 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp. warm water (110º-115º)
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 to 3½ cups all purpose flour

Directions

  1. In a large bowl add the yeast and warm water.
  2. Once the yeast is dissolved add the oil and sugar, stir and let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the egg, salt and enough flour to form a soft dough.
  4. Turn the dough onto a clean floured surface. Knead for 3-5 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
  5. Do not let it rise yet. Divide into 12 equal pieces.
  6. Shape each piece into a ball for rolls, flatten slightly for hamburger buns or shape into a hotdog bun.
  7. Place on a greased baking pan 2” apart. Cover with a towel and let rest for 10 minutes.
  8. Bake in a preheated 425º oven for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Remove rolls from the baking sheet and place them on a cooling rack to cool.

  1. Thank you for a recipe that only makes 12 buns. Last bread recipe I tried made about 48 buns. I felt I was working at a restaurant! I will be trying this version.

    • I know what you mean Betty! Homemade breads and rolls get stale so much faster than store bought so what good is it to have so many unless you freeze them. I hope you like them. ❤️

  2. I’m sure they smell heavenly when they come out of the oven. When I stocked up on pantry items last Fall, I bought Bisquick and a tin of pie cherries intending to make a cobbler in the crockpot. I found the Bisquick the other day … what happened to that idea? That was too difficult for me to tackle I guess … tackling yeast would be way out of my league!

    • Make sure you keep checking the expiration date of the Bisquick, it goes bad and then won’t bake properly due to the baking powder or baking soda expiring in it. Now get busy, chin up and make that cobbler Linda! I want to see the picture when its done. You can do this! Lol

      • Ha ha – I almost dumped the cherry filler into my large container of yogurt. I’ll check the expiration date … took it downstairs and I had high hopes for cornbread in the crockpot too. Not tried that yet either.

      • I’m guilty of buying canned stuff and sticking them downstairs too. I will swear I haven’t had them long and I find them expired. Canned food will last well past the expiration date but not dry products that have baking soda or baking powder in it. It won’t make you sick, it just won’t rise and will be like a pancake.

      • Now I remember I didn’t look at it … I have to go downstairs … don’t laugh, but in the house I have these Muk Luks on my feet to keep my feet warm … a month more while it is still chilly. I switch to shoes to go down in the basement as it’s not safe going downstairs in them. So I only go downstairs to do laundry and get “groceries” in the morning before walking and I wear a pair of moccasins with hard soles on them. A friend of my boss/me made a misstep on the basement stairs last Summer and broke some vertebrae in his neck … he is better now, but had a few surgeries, was in a neck/back brace and a feeding tube until recently. He had polio as a child and that made his problems worse.

      • Oh my goodness Linda how awful! That was how I became disabled back in 96 while working. Customer had broken railing and down I went. Tore my ACL in two and then formed excessive scar tissue and couldn’t do that job anymore. It’s amazing how a life can change in a days time!

      • Oh, I’m sorry to hear that Diane – yes life can change so much in a days time. David is in his early 70s, but was a very active person and he owned a store at Eastern Market in Detroit for decades. It is a small store that specializes in cheeses. He is just now back to work but was off for a long time and asked my boss to make arrangements for him in case he did not make it. He is divorced (after being married 40+ years … wife divorced him as he worked too many hours) and his daughter lives in Boston. So my boss was on standby to be his personal representative. You would think people would check railings as people depend on them to go up and down steps and feel secure doing so.

  3. I don’t have luck with yeast, and I don’t know why. But your photos look so inviting, I might give it another Go.

    P.S. I can almost smell that delicious bread baking from here.
