Shepherd’s Pie
Shepherd’s Pie made in my 10” Cast Iron Pan is always a favorite with my husband. This can be made in any pan and finished off in an oven safe dish if you don’t have cast iron pans. The flavor of all these delicious ingredients come together once you bake it in the oven making this a great one pan meal.

I love my cast iron as well. I’m starting to have trouble lifting them as well.

I make shepherds pie quite often, but never thought of doing it in the cast iron pan, duh. Will try it next time.

That’s a pretty Shepard’s Pie! In all my years making it, I’ve always made it square or rectangle. Never ever thought to make it round. It looks cute as a round pie! Also made a note to try sprinkling Parmesan next time on top.

My husband sometimes put mashed sweet potato on top (in place of the mashed potato) with lots of grated cheddar cheese … a different taste, but still delicious!
Your Shepard pie looks really tasty – we can certainly put that on the menu within the next couple of days 👍🏻.
I would love to try the sweet potatoes because I love them. My husband, however, would go hungry since he can’t stand them. Every now and then I get one big one from the store just to bake and eat for me…lol Thanks!

You’re welcome! That was the bet part, I made the entire thing on the stove top then just popped it I the oven. Less dishes is always a plus for me.

I love Shepherd’s Pie – been ages since eating it though. My mom did hers in stages … the stove-top prep, then baked it with cheese on the top before it came out of the oven. I got to eat the cheese topping as I was “the baby” … even when I was older. 🙂

I should live in Wisconsin Diane! I remember having a baked cheese soup with bacon in it years ago. Can’t recall if my mom made it or it was a restaurant item, but it was so good.
More than likely your mom (the great cook!) made it…lol Mom’s are so busy working today that not that many cook like she did when you were growing up.
Yes, you are right Diane – on both counts. My mom did love to cook and made a hot meal every night, even on the weekends. When it was just the two of you, I said “really, you don’t have to make a big meal on the weekends too.” I was happy she agreed! I think that’s why simple recipes like you offer, or those meal kits are maybe the way to go nowadays.
My daughter has a company that delivers meals to her weekly. All the ingredients come with them, including spices. She buys 2 servings and it feeds her and the kids. She loves them and since we have the kids Thursday Night through Sunday night she only has to buy meals for 4 days.
I keep hearing those advertised like Blue Apron is one and others and that is a good idea that everything is in one place, no forgetting a spice or ingredient and having to dash out. Very smart idea.
