Calamari
Absolutely the BEST Calamari I have ever had…even from the restaurants! I wanted my Calamari to be tender, flavorful, not greasy and it was all of these. I made my Calamari with the body of the squid and the tentacles.
Ingredients
Slice the squid into 1/4” rings. Cut
the tentacles in half if too big.
Add the dry ingredients to the flour.
Mix well and place in a shallow bowl.
Heat the oil to 350 degrees.
Place the squid into the flour mixture
a few at a time. Do not add any liquid.
Coat the squid with the flour mixture.
This is a light coating just barely
covering the squid.
Drop the squid into the hot grease
one piece at a time. Do not overcrowd
them or they will stick together.
I fried about 8 pieces at a time.
Only fry for 2 minutes…no more!
Use a slotted spoon and remove
the Calamari to a paper towel
covered plate. Keep changing the
paper towel so the grease can drain off.
Place the Calamari on a serving
plate and serve immediately.

Ingredients
- 16 oz squid
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1 Tbsp dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- vegetable oil to fill pot about 2-3 inches deep
Directions
- Slice the squid into 1/4″ rings. Cut the tentacles in half if they are too big.
- Combine the dry ingredients and place them in a shallow bowl or plate. DO NOT ADD ANY LIQUID.
- In a deep pot heat the oil to 350 degrees.
- Place a few pieces of the squid in the flour mixture at a time, lightly coating the entire piece, inside the rings too.
- Drop each piece into the hot oil one at a time. I only fry about 8 pieces at a time or they stick together and cool the oil.
- Fry for 2 minutes only, no more or they will be tough.
- Use a slotted spoon and remove the calamari from the oil to a paper towel covered plate. Keep replacing the paper towel so all of the grease drains.
- Place the Calamari on a serving plate and serve immediately.

I LOVE calamari but I’m not sure I’m ready to cook squid! This sounds so good though, I’m thinking about it…
Very easy to make and when you taste it you will want to make it again! I have eaten a lot of Calamari over the years and this recipe is the best Calamari I have ever tasted! Give it a try, you won’t be sorry!
I’m gonna have to 🙂 Thanks for the recipe, Diane!!
You’re welcome!
I watched Jamie Oliver prep it… It looked so good. Now you make it look dl scrumptious, i tnink i shall try it.
Oh please do! Really is simple and as long a you don’t cook over cook it, it is fabulous!
This looks really delicious, and the one-step dry coating is certainly simple and a lot less messy! I’m going to try this one.
Thank you Dorothy I will never make them any other way.
I’ve never been brave enough to try calamari, but I should! You make them sound really delicious.
Virtual hugs,
Judie
They are a mild taste and one of my favorite appetizers! Thank you Judilyn!
Timings are essential aren’t they? Nothing worse than chewy over cooked squid. It’s like eating a rubber band. Thanks for sharing your approachable and clear recipe. Cheers Sebby
Thank you and yes you are so right Sebby!
I had avoided calamari until just a few years ago, and had no idea what I was missing. Now I love it! I haven’t been brave enough to try making it yet, but maybe it’s time.
I love this stuff!!!! So much better and cheaper to make, give it a try Amanda!
I think I will! Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
Definitely!
In the (northern) Italian half of my family we always serve calamari as a tomato and garlic stew. Lots of hots and black pepper, too, on cold autumn and winter days.
OMG I would love that recipe! I actually thought about making some sort of soup out of the squid but ran out of time.
Funny to come across this recipe as today we are headed to a favorite spot for some calamari which is one of Terry the Quilting Husband’s favorite treats! I am not sure I will become so brave to make it myself BUT if I do – look you posted a recipe! You rock 🙂
I hope you had a great time and delicious Calamari! Thanks!
Love squid! That dush looks great.
Thank you Sheree!
I’ve had squid and love it! Octopus too! Not for everyone but I like it…
I would have it more but it is so hard to find!
Never thought I could make calamari! Thank you, Diane, for what looks like an easy recipe.
Oh yes definitely easy and even better tasting! Thank you and I hope you give it a try Jonetta.
This looks yummy.
Thank you it really was delicious. I love Calamari so much!!! Have a great day!
I love calamari! I’ve never made it at home, as I prefer to make stuffed squid for myself. Always been worried my calamari wouldn’t turn out right. But this looks like a great recipe to try.
If you follow my recipe and do not over cook it you will love it! It really was the best I have ever had and easy to make. Give it a try Jen.
My aunt married a Maltese man and he used to make octopus stew and it was spicy, in a tomato base of some sort. I didn’t know what it was and they said “here, try this” … I saw the suckers on the tentacles … OMG. It was very good though. These look like onion rings.
I sliced the body to make the rings. The back of my plate are the tentacles. These were small squid but there were still tentacles.
I see – I don’t know how he cut up the octopus, but there were big chunks with the “suckers” still attached to them.
It really doesn’t matter how you cut them because they still taste the same…..delicious!
Great recipe!
Thanks Jess!
Welcome
You know Diane, this goes into my saved storage for trying later
Wonderful….. it tasted fantastic! Thanks Kurian!
Thank you Diane. I will try to make
Hello, dear Diane!
I have never, in my entire life cook or ate this dish, though it seems really tasty.
Should I be open to new foods?
Thanks for sharing and all the best!
Katherine.
Absolutely! I try new foods and recipes constantly! My husband always says something is good but he’ll never see them again because I make something new almost daily…lol Have a great week Katherine.
Its good you keep him busy 😂.
Same to you, dear Diane! 😊🤗
The Pops likes calamari. Thanks for the frying idea. I think I will try with tempura mix instead of flour, since he’s more used to eating that for fried seafoods. You cover all kinds ‘o foods! 🐙
Awesome I hope he likes it! I do like variety…lol
I made this once for a boyfriend I didn’t much care for as a joke. As it turned out they were really good. :/
That is so funny! They are so good!
I love calamari, so does my family! I had never really thought about making it myself!!! Thanks for the recipe
You’re welcome!
I love calimari!
It’s amazing!
Yum! I hate when calamari is over-greasy. Yours looks perfect, Diane. Way better than any restaurant I’ve been to!
You are so kind! Thank you
