Yes I did! I made a SPAM & Cheese Sandwich! I have never had SPAM before and my husband saw it at the grocery store and gave it to me to make something with it for my blog. I bought SPAM many decades ago and I was afraid to try it so I gave it away to a food drive! I have never heard anything bad about SPAM, I just didn’t know if I would like it.

According to http://www.mailguard.com, the word SPAM is derived from a contraction of “Spiced Ham”. During WWII and beyond, the word SPAM stood for “Special Processed American Meat”. The first can of SPAM was produced in 1937 when it became the USA’s biggest seller. When Americans went to WWII they were given 15 million cans of SPAM each week!

  1. I love Fried Spam and Cheese Sandwiches. Especially now, with all the different “flavors” of Spam to change things up. Thanks for reminding me of a childhood favorite!

  2. Oh, this makes me so happy. I love grilled or pan-seared Spam. I am the only one in my family that will eat it so I rarely buy it unless I just get a craving for it. Congrats on being brave Diane!
I will have to share this to prove I am not the only one who eats Spam. Wait, you didn’t say if you liked it? lol

    • Frying it took that softness away. I tried it before I fried it and I agree….too soft. But when I fried it, it carmelized it and made it more solid. I even ate it cold the next day!

  3. My grandmother used to make things like this with spam when I was a kid so I was never as unsure about spam as I know a lot of others are! And it’s really popular in Hawaii and they have lots of creative recipes using it, even in sushi, oddly enough!

    • Every time we visit Amish Country, twice a year, my husband buys bologna. He loves fried bologna and I even did a post on it a while back. We ate it a lot when I was a child so it doesn’t really appeal to me anymore but my husband loves it!

    • It took me decades to try it. I don’t like it right out of the can but fried and on a sandwich was very good! I even ate the fried leftover pieces cold for lunch the next day and they were delicious!

  4. I love spam!! I’ll have to try it with the cheese!! It’s also good as a sandwich with tomato and mustard!! Yum!! And the Turkey Spam is delicious!!

  5. I recently rekindled my love of SPAM and usually have a can stashed away. The stuff is so good crisped up when you want something meaty and salty. I almost like it more than bacon. For those who are scared of meat in a can, there is a surprisingly short list of ingredients in a can of SPAM.
