Also they go to the sink drains to lay eggs and stay at night. Before you go to bed, poor boiling water OR bleach down the drain to kill thy and their eggs.
Love this, honestly so helpful. I always have to deal with fruit flies and this solution looks like the perfect way to get rid of them. Thanks for sharing.
You are just all around brilliant! I did not know any of this. But I have a bowl on the counter and just bleached down the drains and plugged them up! xx
Holy hell I’m going to try this right now. I’ve had a lot of ripe produce and a lot of these annoying pests. Hope it works. If not I’m going to lose my mind!
Also pour bleach or boiling water down all of the drains before you go to sleep. That’s where they go at night time and where they lay eggs. They are SO annoying!
Good to know – I get little ants in the Spring every so many years … someone said to put cornmeal in a bowl and they climb in and eat it, then seek a water source and then they blow up.
The best way I found to get rid of ants is with borax and powdered sugar. The ants eat the mixture, take it back to the nest and it kills the entire nest instead of just the few you see. Use 1 part borax to 3 parts powdered sugar. Put it on a paper plate or plastic lid right in the path the ants take. If you have pets or kids make sure they can’t get to this at all! I had ants climbing up to my hummingbird feeders like an army. I didn’t want to harm any animals so I put the mixture in a pop can and set the opening at the pole they were climbing and lo and behold they were gone!
I am going to save this info – it has happened twice in the last 4-5 years. And, then I had an army of flying ants. I Googled and they said it would 24 hours, they would find a mate and die. They were right, but it was horrid and I work from my kitchen table and I am near a hanging light … they were buzzing around my face. I am definitely trying this next Spring.

Hopefully you won’t need it!

I agree but I’ve tucked it away – it was scary the first year it happened and then nothing happened again til this year.

We get them every year! Having all our garden produce and fresh fruit does it!

I imagine they would have a feeding frenzy inside and outside, if you were not diligent about keeping them at bay.

Hi,
I know this is a little late coming, but I wanted to thank you for visiting my site and I hope you enjoyed my trip across the Atlantic and back to Canada and it’s east coast ports.
I like your site and found it interesting and instructive, what kind of cleaner is Dawn, we dont have that over here? keep up the good work.
Yes so sick of fruit flies so will use your tip for this summers crops. In Spring next year hope to build a root cellar and hide the mound as on top build a pavilion to observe to lake then place all potato ,onion apples pears and preserves on shelving in trays .Art is to have it cool out of frosts and insulated. Then air flow is vital. So chimney can be one or all posts on pavilion. Moist air is vital too so bowls of water in the root cellar may help. Still have to block build a 12 x 12 room half under ground and then as lake is extended back fill the cellar all over leaving a porch door to get inside down small steps and door to cellar before you. I will fix power to luminate the pavilion so light can be taken into cellar using rubber lid points. Big job but kills two birds with one stop as other wise no pavilion.
I found this recipe on Pinterest like a month ago because there was so many fruit flies and we couldn’t get rid of them it was the worst but this solution came in handy for us. Haha
We wrap our fruit tightly in those smallish saved plastic bags from supermarket produce. Little buggers run out of air sooner than you think.
Hahaha that’s hilarious!
Wonderful tip! Thanks for sharing.
Your welcome!
This is great to know, thanks!
You’re welcome!
Great solution (but poor little fruit flies…ha, just kidding!) 🙂
They are fine outside but no bugs in my house…hahahaha
Bloody Brilliant! Thank you. <3

Thank you. Those pests love to buzz up my nose! I will try the vingear and dawn. 🙂🤗
Aren’t they the most annoying things!
Oh yes!!! Pests! 😝

Dawn is a liquid dish soap. You could use any brand of liquid dish soap. Yes I enjoyed your trip and wish I could do the same!

Where do you get all your energy! You need to come here so I can hire you…lol I love the pavilion idea…so clever!
Blog post cut off…how much vinegar to the 3 drops of Dawn?
So sorry….2 cups apple cider vinegar.

Great because those little creeps are annoying!
I hate flies too. They’re not just annoying, but they’re ugly as hell too!
