These were so much fun to make and a nice change from using a bun. I used puff pastry and I wrapped polish kielbasa and hot dogs for a meal with our grandkids. You can use any type of cooked sausage you want with these. Serve them whole like the picture above, cut them in half or even into bite size pieces and serve as an appetizer.

Thaw the puff pastry and lay both sheets out flat.

Cut both puff pastry sheets down the middle between the fold lines

making two sheets out of each one giving you four total.

Fold the dough over the hot dogs or kielbasa all the way to the end.

You don’t have to be fancy, you can just roll the hot dog

or kielbasa up in the dough instead of you want to.

Place foil on a baking sheet and spray it with cooking oil.

Place the puff pastries on the foil.

Ingredients

  • 8 hotdogs, cooked sausage or cooked kielbasa the length of the hotdogs (your hot dogs and kielbasa are already cooked when you open the package. No additional cooking is needed for them before baking them inside the puff pastry)
  • 1 box puff pastry containing 2 pastry sheets-thawed
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tsp water

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry sheets so they are flat.
  3. Cut both pastry sheets lengthwise between the folds making four long sheets total.
  4. Place two hot dogs or kielbasa in the center of each puff pastry sheet.
  5. Make diagonal slices in the pastry on each side of the hot dogs or kielbasa. Fold the pastry strips over the meat starting at the top and continuing to the other end.
  6. Cover a large baking sheet with foil. Spray the foil with cooking oil. Place the wrapped hot dogs and kielbasa on the foil.
  7. Make an egg wash by combining the egg white and water and whisking with a fork. Brush the egg wash all over the top and sides of the pastry dough just until wet.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes or until the pastry is a golden brown.
  9. Serve as is, cut in half or into bite size pieces for an appetizer.

  1. Brilliant
I’ve been wrapping a hotdog with cheese and condiments into a tortilla (“dogarito”)
    Yours are civilized!
    Always brilliant!

  2. This looks like real fun! ;-> Presume the same method could be used with just about any fairly solid filling – herbed sliced chicken/turkey comes to mind??? We take our own food almost everywhere, so I’m thinking this might be nice for a change from my everyday sourdough French bread.

    Virtual hugs,

    Judie

  3. I love this idea! There’s just something about ready-made buns that I don’t care for. But fresh baked right out of the oven….oh, my!

  4. They look tasty … my mom used to use pastry and wrap it around then seal the bottoms like a blanket. She had cooked breakfast sausages in the and they were called “pigs in a blanket” … loved them.

  5. mmm. it looks wonderful. I also immediately thought of pigs in a blanket when I saw this post. Your version is much classier than the old pigs in a blanket recipe.

  6. Tried and succeeded twice with homemade sausage but bought puff pastry second time. we loved them as juice was kept inside of it and the taste was delicious .Thank you as never gave bought puff pastry a though but it really saves hard work and time and tastes almost the same
