Homemade Taco Seasoning
How many boxes of Taco Seasoning have you bought in the last year? We use a lot of Taco Seasoning and we save money by making our own. I also know what ingredients are in mine because I put them there! Most of the ingredients you probably already have in your cupboard. It only takes a few minutes to make a batch.
Source: I adapted my recipe from foodrenegade.com.
Ingredients
Put the ingredients in a bowl and combine.
Store in an airtight container.
(Use 3 Tbsp of the mixture to replace one – 1.25 oz packet you buy at the store)

I love making my own, I’d never go back to the store bought ones. So many of them have sugar, why?! I make one exactly like this, except that I haven’t tried with onion powder yet…I figured because there’s always onions in Mexican recipes that I didn’t need it. Maybe i’ll adjust it and try that.
I agree they put sugar in everything! You can never have too much onion..lol
Such an awesome share 💯
Thank you jyo!! Have a great weekend!
Thanks for the share. Every year, I like to give my family different jars of spices as Christmas Gifts. I’ve added your recipe to this gift. Have a great day.
Awesome! I love giving homemade food items as gifts as well. Have you ever made homemade vanilla extract? I gave that as gifts as well. I have the recipe on my website if you’re interested in making it. It has to be started now to ready for Christmas. Great gifts!
Gonna check out the Vanilla Extract – especially since I’ll be needing some in my own pantry for holiday baking.
So cool and you won’t believe how it is made!
I’ve done this for years to be able to control the amount of spice for picky eaters!
We do whatever we can to get them to eat…lol
Great recipe! You know what I have been doing for tacos lately – I have been simmering my cooked ground beef in my favorite salsa diluted with water. I simmer it a long time and the salsa/water mixture evaporates and I am left with deeply salsa seasoned ground beef. Makes yummy tacos 🙂
Wow what a great idea!!! Makes perfect sense and what a wonderful flavor it must have. Thanks for sharing your idea!!!
Great idea!! Money saving recipe!!!
So simple to make! Thanks PS!
Thank you 😊
You are very welcome!
Wonderful choice of spices, I just love this seasoning !
Thank you we use it a lot and love it too!
Looks good
Thank you!
Have always wondered about this one, thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome!
Always make my own seasonings! Love that they are organic and, yes, what is in them. 😊
I keep adding more herbs to my garden every year. I love dehydrating them!
That is awesome!
Thank you for sharing this. My mother-in-law used to make her own taco seasoning, but we failed to copy her recipe. I will definitely try yours.
You’re welcome Tanja! If you want experiment by changing the cayenne pepper with crush red pepper. Just use more crushed red pepper..1/4 or 1/2 tsp.
I wanted to mention that my mother-in-law figured out that a manual coffee grinder works very well for spices, too, so she designated one for that use alone (although an adventurous soul might like the different flavors the coffee beans could take on).
I do that too! Mine plugs in though. I will never use it for coffee again because I dehydrate jalapeños and grind them to a powder…lol It does a wonderful job! Your mother-in-law is a smart lady!
You’re right Diane, I have all these in my cupboard. What an amazing savings and it is nice to know what is it in. I will definitely make this one. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome and it is so cheap to make! Thanks Carla!

Fresh is always better!
I agree Javy Dreamer and thank you!
Great idea!
Thanks!
I use a very similar recipe. I also use the mixture on pork chops and chicken. I add a bit of corn starch to thicken up the water. Exactly like store bought. Haven’t purchased taco seasoning (or any other packaged mix) in years.
Wonderful! Great idea with the cornstarch too! Thanks for sharing that.
I only discovered that a couple years ago when my family complained it wasn’t like the packet. Now they have no complaints. Love finding like-minded culinary friends!
How much do you add?
Not sure…I eye-ball it. I make a slurry…maybe a tsp or two. Can always add more, if need be.
Thanks!
Anytime
Thank you so much!!!
Love it! Thanks for sharing!
I agree with several others…making your own seasoning blends is completely awesome. 😎
