Regrowing Celery
I found this absolutely fascinating! I read somewhere that it was possible to regrow celery from an old celery stalk so I finally decided to give it a try. It is a long process but just knowing it works was so exciting. It took about a month to get the celery to grow this tall and all I did was keep it in water that I changed every two days. Keep in mind though that I kept this on my kitchen countertop on the side of a north window so it didn’t get much sunlight.
The first step was cutting off the old bunch of celery that had gone bad. Mine was really yucky and there was no way I was going to save it for eating. You can see the first new growth starting in the center.
Next the leaves started to form from the center.
One root popped out of the bottom.
Now I have a stalk, more leaves and multiple roots.

It will be another 3 weeks before we are safe from
frost in our area and we can plant our garden. If my new celery
growth continues to grow I will plant it in the garden
just to see if I can harvest my new celery.

I’ll need to remember this for next year – our garden is in (and overflowing). Next year we are building several more planter boxes. Celery will be a must.
Good luck!
I love doing this. It is a great way to save money!
It was so cool! I never knew!
Just when I thought that I had seen it all……How clever and how much fun.
This I see fascinating. I can’t believe I never knew this. Thank you so much for posting this. Might try it just to see if I can. My problem that I have growing things in the house is city water. I do let it sit for a day or so to try to get the chemicals out of it. Does seem to help.
All I used was city water and it still worked. Took almost 2 weeks to sprout so be patient!
Fascinating!
Wow! This is so cool! I’ll definitely try this out! 😊
It was so much fun watching it grow! Be patient it is slow. It took almost two weeks to even start but then it was quicker.
I’ve hatched an avocado ones which took months!! Weeks seem nice for a change. 😉 An I’m currently trying to bring a mango seed to live. 😊
Cool! I have heard you can grow fruit and vegetables from the store produce but unless they are hybrid (if my memory serves me right) you won’t get them to produce. I hope yours does that would be so cool!
That really would be cool!! Will let you know when it works – could take a few years though, lol!
Good Luck Sarah!
Really interesting, I think it would be a great class project for an elementary school class.
Yes it would! What a great idea.
Loved it
Thanks!
What, really? That’s so cool
I know I was so excited!!! It’s the simple things in life I enjoy….hahahaha
For sure, that’s how one enjoys life🤗
Cool!
Thanks!
I remember when my son was in 1st grade. He put a celery stalk in a cup of water. Then added a little red food coloring. It was interesting to see just how the red water went up the stalk feeding it. Thanks for the memories!
Oh yes we use to do that with flowers! Great memories!
Special memories that never go away! Thank you, and have a great day!!
Nice share
Thanks!
I need to start earning a celery one of these years…
Wow, cool, I gotta try this 🤔
I can’t wait to plant mine! It has been fun watching it grow but it is a slow process!
Mine is going in this weekend 😉
Good luck!
Neat! There are surprisingly a number of things that can be regrown. It just takes time, love, and patience. 🙂
It has been fun I may not wait for the garden and plant it in a container. I don’t want it to die now that there are roots.
fantastic Diane!
Thanks! It was and still is fun watching it grow in just water!
What a great idea. I have a stalk in my refrigerator that I might try, although it might be too late.
Mine looked really bad and I never thought it would work but after almost 2 weeks it sprouted!
I am all got growing things but seems lately, I have a black thumb ( as opposed to green one) I killed a cactus for crying out loud. ONe a happy note, my attempt at murdering a newly sprouted avocado plant failed, and that lil’ guy just reached 12″ in height. 🙂
Aw sometimes it is just the location! I’m glad you avocado is doing well! 12″ is amazing!!
Wow ! This is amazing !!
It’s been fun!
I’ve tried once, grew for couple of weeks but then the root get rotten 🙁 I guess i gave it too much water and never plant it on the ground. I hope yours got more luck 🙂
Thanks I can’t wait to plant it and see if it lives!
Brilliant! We used to chop the tops of carrots and grow them in saucers when we were kids. Sadly we didn’t get new carrots but the leaves were very pretty LOL.
Yes and we put toothpicks in a half of a potato and grew them! Hahaha fun times!
I remember doing that too! Thanks for the memories 🙂
I never knew either that you could grow a new celery heart just from the base of an old one. I was surprised new roots grew. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
You’re welcome I am starting green onions too!
Yes will give this a try.We grow everything else why not dear Diane. Green onions too wow! worth trying new things thats how we all learn. Big learning curve all ones life.Thank you for sharing this.
You are so welcome! Have a great day!
How cool is that
Wow 👏
I now have two stalks growing from it. So much fun watching it grow. I still haven’t found time to plant it!
