Regrowing Celery

I found this absolutely fascinating! I read somewhere that it was possible to regrow celery from an old celery stalk so I finally decided to give it a try. It is a long process but just knowing it works was so exciting. It took about a month to get the celery to grow this tall and all I did was keep it in water that I changed every two days. Keep in mind though that I kept this on my kitchen countertop on the side of a north window so it didn’t get much sunlight.

The first step was cutting off the old bunch of celery that had gone bad. Mine was really yucky and there was no way I was going to save it for eating. You can see the first new growth starting in the center.

Next the leaves started to form from the center.

One root popped out of the bottom.

Now I have a stalk, more leaves and multiple roots.

It will be another 3 weeks before we are safe from

frost in our area and we can plant our garden. If my new celery

growth continues to grow I will plant it in the garden

just to see if I can harvest my new celery.

  1. I’ll need to remember this for next year – our garden is in (and overflowing). Next year we are building several more planter boxes. Celery will be a must.

  2. This I see fascinating. I can’t believe I never knew this. Thank you so much for posting this. Might try it just to see if I can. My problem that I have growing things in the house is city water. I do let it sit for a day or so to try to get the chemicals out of it. Does seem to help.

  3. I remember when my son was in 1st grade. He put a celery stalk in a cup of water. Then added a little red food coloring. It was interesting to see just how the red water went up the stalk feeding it. Thanks for the memories!

  4. I am all got growing things but seems lately, I have a black thumb ( as opposed to green one) I killed a cactus for crying out loud. ONe a happy note, my attempt at murdering a newly sprouted avocado plant failed, and that lil’ guy just reached 12″ in height. 🙂

  5. I’ve tried once, grew for couple of weeks but then the root get rotten 🙁 I guess i gave it too much water and never plant it on the ground. I hope yours got more luck 🙂

  6. Brilliant! We used to chop the tops of carrots and grow them in saucers when we were kids. Sadly we didn’t get new carrots but the leaves were very pretty LOL.

  7. I never knew either that you could grow a new celery heart just from the base of an old one. I was surprised new roots grew. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
