Suet Cakes
Although this is not food for people, Suet Cakes are made in my kitchen and very important to the birds! This is the time of the year when the seeds and berries are starting to disappear making it hard for the birds to find food in my area. By making a big batch of Suet Cakes, I can cut and wrap them in the actual sizes to fit my suet feeders. I make a big batch and pour them into 9″ x 13″ pans. Before they completely set, I cut them into the shape I need. I wrap them in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag. That way I can keep them frozen until I am ready to use them.
Suet Cakes are very easy to make and there are many combinations of food you can put into them. I used lard, peanut butter, bird seed, sunflower seeds, crushed peanuts, cracked corn and corn meal in this batch. You can also add oatmeal, dried fruits like raisins, currants or apricots. The birds will devour any combination you put together. You will be amazed at how much cheaper it is to make Suet Cakes at home compared to buying them at the store!

that much suet would last me 4 or 5 years., so I get the smaller cakes from the store. the woodpeckers love them.
Really? I do 2-9×13 dishes and it makes it through the winter. We have been feeding the birds for 25 years so word is out to eat at our house…lol

Can you use something like Crisco for the fat?
Yes you can however, if you are feeding them in a warmer climate you may find that the Crisco may melt, They also love beef fat so you can save that until you have enough to use.
